SEN observation

Hello!
I was asked to sign a SEN observation form at nursery today for my 2.5 year old daughter, just wanting some information on what's next and what to expect etc?
The reasons they gave was that her speech is delayed, although improving and she's not very good with socialising/joining in.
She also throws almighty tantrums over minor inconveniences, working with the nursery these are becoming few and far between now with trying different distraction techniques.
Honestly the nursery are great and I'm glad they're doing it, whether it's a SEN related outcome at the end or not it's going to help us all either way.
Is there anyone that can shed some light on what's to come next or how the observation is done etc, it'd be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

There isn't a 'standard' "SEN Observation Form", so it does depend what it is they have aske you to sign.

Potentially it could be to allow someone from the LA to do an observation. These posts are called different names in different local authorities. Each authority works differently.
If this is the case, then they will observe your dd in the room and your dd might not even be aware they are watching them. OTOH, the person might interact with your dd (just as any person working in the Nursery would - through play) to try to get a clearer picture of her development.
It is likely that they will then give some advice / strategies to the Nursery staff of things to try, to support her.

Potentially - and I have no idea of your dd's needs, obviously - but, unless the Nursery is very new / staff very inexperienced, they are only really likely to refer to the LA staff if they have fairly significant concerns, so it is feasible that the person who comes in might suggest who they can refer to perhaps for investigations into her difficulties from a health point of view.

Or it might be that the LA are doing a big push on speech development and have staff who can come out and advise on that.

Every LA is different, so we can only guess. The best thing is to go back to the SENCo at Nursery and say you would like to understand a little bit more about what it was you signed, and what their concerns are and what happens next.
