Our baby is 5 months old and we are looking into a hair chair for weaning next month. Does anyone have any recommendations?

The IKEA one. Antilop. Always!

craigth162 · 07/12/2023 12:26

Definitely ikea one

LadyDanburysHat · 07/12/2023 12:28

Again the antilop. You can't beat it. You can spend a fortune on an all singing all dancing one, but they have loads of crevices that are heard to clean

Antilop. Easy one to answer!

AdoringDavidAttenborough · 07/12/2023 12:29

The IKEA one. It will get covered in food. You think you know mess, but you don't until you wean. Put down newspaper underneath too and buy a good mop.

I love my wooden one that can convert between high chair and table and chair and without the tray it fits under the table so she can eat with us now she is older but not really bigger! Now she is 3 she loves being able to climb in herself. The table is good for craft and baking with her.
This highchair was my niece's bought in 2010 and my daughter is the 3rd child in it and has been in it for nearly 3 years. It could be passed /sold on to many more children!

Both grandparents have the IKEA chairs they are ok but I find them a bit rigid and tricky for getting my daughter in and out of them especially when she was in a leg locking phase! It's seems tight around the legs for us and I have a 2nd percentile baby. Find for a couple of days a week but grating when it's 3 meals a day!

As with everything baby my first thing to look into is what can you get for free or second hand. Both the grandparents IKEA chairs were second hand. One for free and one for £5

MadMadamMimz · 07/12/2023 12:44

I was going to buy the IKEA one but I found that once I had added all the extra bits like cushion, cushion cover, footrest, tray etc. then the cost quickly wracked up so for a similar price I bought the Joie Mimsy Snacker which is excellent and folds up easily if space is limited.

(With hindsight I now see I probably didn't need the cushion for the ikea chair as my ds would have been none the wiser).

neleh87 · 07/12/2023 12:51

I second the joie mimzy snacker. Ours was £30 reduced at John Lewis. It folds up and is easy to clean.

JollyJellyCat · 07/12/2023 12:52

The ikea one like everyone else says. Get one second hand and see how you get on with it.

Big bonus is the same one is used by 50% of restaurants pubs and cafés so baby will be used to it.

bettynutkins · 07/12/2023 12:58

Another for IKEA. I don't actually have it, my mum does. And I'm jealous of her very easy to use highchair. Mine is such a faff to clean.

GreatGateauxsby · 07/12/2023 13:02

Boringly…. I recommend the ikea antilop

get a catchy for underneath and also the ikea little blow up seat insert with cover.

its about £50 for the lot and you can resell for about £25 or £30

Himawarigirl · 07/12/2023 14:06

The ikea one. The bits can go in the dishwasher, you can usually pick one up for £5 second hand, they are totally wipe clean and no weird nooks and crannies for food to get stuck in. We moved on to a tripp trapp when they were a bit older. Also second hand as they are insane new!

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 07/12/2023 14:20

tripp trap or ikea one

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/12/2023 14:25

Ikea

Best money you'll ever spend

Nejnej · 07/12/2023 14:48

We love our tripp Trapp, bought second hand as it's super expensive otherwise - and I love how it will last for years as a toddler seat.

We have an ikea at my dads, and it's great but I wish it had a footplate (I think you can buy them elsewhere though).

Starry4321 · 11/12/2023 11:07

Thanks all, we are leaning towards the IKEA one now based on these positive experiences but also will look at the joie mimzy snacker as that’s been mentioned a few times also.

The Joie Mimzy Snacker was good enough for a while and great if you need to fold it away after use but personally I didn't find it that easy to clean.

When we moved house and had more space we switched to the IKEA antilop, with a Catchy for underneath. Just so so good. The only teeny tiny thing that bugs me about the chair is that I constantly seem to trip over one of the legs of the IKEA chair, it's like the legs look less widespread than they actually are. Or I'm just super clumsy!

NannyR · 20/01/2024 00:10

Having used many highchairs, I would always recommend the antilop. The stokke tripp trapp is also a good choice if you want to spend a bit more on a chair that will last throughout childhood, but it can be a bit of a pain to clean during the messy learning to feed themselves phase.

rllrsk8 · 20/01/2024 00:23

We have a 7 month old, I bought the Stokke Clikk highchair secondhand but in great condition. I love how easy it is to clean and how it fits in with my home - they were two of my top priorities. It is easy to pack up for travel and suitable as a toddler chair, too. The only things I don't like are that you can't really take the tray off when baby is sitting in the chair even when strapped in, and the tray is a little small.

Also considered the Vital baby Nourish Scoop high chair as a foldable option - I've heard it's super easy to get baby in and out of this one.

Heard good things about the Bugaboo Giraffe but it's the absolute opposite end of the budget to the ANTILOP.

Good luck with your weaning journey and have fun, I've been cleaning sweet potato off the ceiling tonight! Grin Also recommend Bibado bibs, whatever highchair option you go for!

professionalnomad · 20/01/2024 12:03

Antilop or Tripp Trapp - we love the tripp trapp as my toddler can now use it and sit with us at the big dining table

SugarAndSpike · 20/01/2024 12:13

IKEA. Hands down.

It was recommended to me on MN years back and I'm so glad it was.

Easy enough to just hose it down outside. I've even put parts in the dishwasher 😂

wishIwasonholiday10 · 20/01/2024 13:49

I like our Tripp Trapp and am hoping to get use of it for years to come. The IKEA ones are not bad but I would definitely get the foot rest to make it more ergonomic if you get one.

buckeejit · 20/01/2024 18:50

More antilop love here!

Onelittleone216 · 20/01/2024 20:41

IKEA antilop! I bought a foot rest for about £13 on Etsy otherwise what you get in ikea is perfect (high chair, insert and insert cover). Only downside is that it doesn’t pack away or fold up so you need room to leave it out.
