Christmas gift ideas for 5 month old

Hi all, our parents are asking for some gift ideas for our 5 month old baby. Obviously baby won’t know it’s Christmas, so we are thinking of asking for some useful gifts that might keep baby stimulated or busy as they grow. I’ve looked at some of these play centres like this

DH and I will be just getting a few small gifts for baby like some new books. It’s really the grandparents that are wanting some ideas!

anyone have any recommendations for this age range?

Mine got given stacking cups and the Fisher Price talking Puppy thing at that age and still plays with both a year later. A jumperoo is also a good idea - their use is quite short lived though. In hindsight I would have tried to buy one second hand. DD also liked Galt soft blocks at that age.

If your parents will go for useful gifts, any clothes you might need, weaning things, things like that.

For 'big' toys, a lot of people do like an activity cube or sit-in thing. If it's a jumping one, though, check what the advice is on how long they should use it – I think a lot of the jumping things are only supposed to be used for 10-15 minutes at a time a couple of times a day. A push-along walker (not a sit-in one, they're not safe) is another option – some come with blocks or activities on the front.

For smaller toys, stacking cups, sensory blocks or balls, lift-the-flap books, some music-making toys (various electronic options available, but also xylophone, drum, maracas), a little car/animal/whatever with wheels they can push along the floor once they start crawling. Stacking rings, shape sorters, hide-and-squeak eggs, and the galt (or similar) pop-up people are all also good, but would potentially get more use from 12-18 months, so might be worth saving for first birthday ideas (but depends on the child).

We did need want read and wear for my family.
Want was birth to potty wraps for her to grow into as we did cloth nappies
Need was sensory stuff
Read was a few pop up books and an animal noises books.

We did with too
Need was weaning stuff
Want was a stacking rocket and a jigsaw where each piece was an insect. Both aimed at older kids but she has played with since 8 months when it was fun to destroy them to now when she is building them herself at 3
Read we got some of the baby university books as we are both scientists and like that sort of geekiness!

I give strict instructions about what clothes we are short of and in what size as my daughter is small and was in 0-3 month clothes until 5 and half months so everything for the wrong season if they just go by age

You'll be weaning soonish so one suggestion would be cute bowls/ plates/ cups etc.

Both Lamaze and Jellycat soft toys are lovely at a young age.

Books? The "That's Not My" ones, or something like Acorn Wood will probably start to come into their own within the next year. Or Noisy Crow do some good ones with moving parts.

Overall, I'd try and think about what you want for the next year as a whole, rather than what baby would like right now.

I got my baby a ball pit and he still loves it a year later so that's the main present I would recommend!

Most other toys he grew out of by his first birthday so were quiet short lived.

I would ask for vouchers or money in savings at this age, with just a couple of smaller gifts to open. It’s too hard to predict what a 5 month old may like in future. I definitely wouldn’t get something like you’ve linked new. There are 1000s floating round on vinted/FB market place/charity shops etc for a fraction of the cost. They have a very short life span and baby may not even like them that much.

I also have a 5 month old. We've asked for sensory bits, disco balls, light up tambourine, glowsticks etc. light up bath toys. But then also asked grandparents for a footmuff, ready for when DD goes into her big girl pram and if you don't have any for future sizes, clothes. I think this Christmas is more about what you need for baby. Enjoy your first Christmas with baby :)

Try to persuade them to do a day out
small bits clothes that they need
stuff for weaning
water cups that feels
bamboo plate that sticks to the table
anything that means you don’t need to buy it for the next 6 months

Activity cube/triangle, push along walker that has activities/buttons on the front, ball pit
