8 Week Baby Weight Gain

Hello!

Hoping someone may be able to weigh in with their own experiences with baby weight gain. We had our twins' 8 week check last week and I'm panicking.

One of the babies' weight has stayed flat for 2 weeks (2.65kg then to 2.58kg last week). Head circumference has increased however from 32.5cm to 35.5cm and she looks longer and more filled out these past two weeks, so I'm baffled as to how that translates to no weight gain.

Developmentally she is smiling, engaged and alert and taking plenty of formula every day.

The GP was unphased and recommended we get another weigh in two weeks. We were already booked to see the health visitor then so that aligned perfectly. Despite this, I feel dreadful and as though we're failing.

Does anybody have any stories or experiences of anything similar with their babies?

Worth adding the babies were born at 36+4 and the one with the slow weight gain now was the better gainer up until this.

Were they weighed using a different set of scales? It's unlikely that a baby whose head has grown loads has lost weight. Also babies getting so little nutrition that their weight drops (rather than just not following the weight curve but still actually growing) are unlikely to be happy, smiley and alert. My guess is that this was a different set of scales and one set was inaccurate. It's impossible not to worry when your babies are so young but please try to watch your baby for signs he or she is happy and growing normally and ignore the scales until you have evidence it's a problematic pattern rather than a one off anomaly.

Could be a different set of scales, or could be the difference between full bladder/bowels/tummy two weeks ago and had just filled her nappy and was due a feed at the last weight. If she's alert, happy, feeding well, and plenty of wet and dirty nappies, I'd try to keep the faith until the next weight with the HV.

After a month of no weight gain our baby was given antibiotics for suspected infection (though further tests were inconclusive). We were EBF though so unsure how much milk was actually going in and in hindsight they looked really unhealthy. Not really sure what it was but after that things picked up fine and no further issues with weight. Sounds like with yours that you know they are getting enough formula but you could always get another weight done this week if it will help you feel more reassured.

Thanks all! Yes @CasaMundi it was a different set of scales (it has been for every weigh in!)

Hoping it's the change in scales and possibly full baby/empty baby factoring in too. I know deep down there are so many factors but it's difficult not to worry.

@Maryamlouise did your baby have any other signs of infection? Wondering if there's anything I need to keep an eye out for to flag with the HV.

The midwife scales are wildly inaccurate

my baby was gaining 800g and losing 300g within 24hr period…

in the end we weighed her by using our home scales and standing on them with and without baby
