Getting rid of dummy

We are currently on night 4 with no dummy. And it is a nightmare! We only used it for naps and bed time previously but he’s so attached and wants it all the time. After day one he stopped asking for it but tonight he’s asking for it. Last night he slept a grand total of 4 hours which was broken up into hour sleeps. I’m exhausted and assumed by now it would be better

any tips or advice on what more I can do?
for reference, my son is going to be 3 in a month and I’ve been sitting with him to go sleep and he’s not crying but it’s taking hours to go to sleep and he’s just sitting and playing with a toy in bed. Previously with a dummy, we would read a book and then say goodnight and leave him to go sleep (took 5-10 mins)

Can it wait a few weeks? Our nursery is doing a dummy fairy who will take them away at Christmas for babies in need. Nursery are talking about it in their "circle time" with the kids too

Growing up dummies used to be left on the tray for father Christmas when we were 2-3. Similar line about going to other babies

I wouldn't drop the dummy until daytime naps have ended. Otherwise, you'll end up losing daytime sleeping before child is ready.

Once dummy is nighttime only and there are no daytime naps, child is more exhausted come bedtime and the process is easier.

I suppose it can wait. The reason we did it now was because on the first night he chose to sleep without it so we thought this was it. Although I do feel like the sleepless nights would be a waste if I gave up now

Ah I see, that makes sense. He only has naps on a Saturday. He doesn’t nap any other day. He only naps the Saturday because he does football class and he’s tuckered out so falls asleep in the car on the way home.

maybe if it’s no better sleep wise tomorrow I’ll just give it back

Don't give it back now!! Stick it out. He will get used to it.

Thank you!

See it through!
You are almost there. Night 4 of sleepless nights and our DC crying for dummy we almost gave in as exhausted. Persevered. Night 7 and that was it. Never cried for it again. Just got used to not having it as comforting soothing mechanism for bed. Maybe try replace dummy with teddy or sleep in with them for cuddles to comfort.

He has teddies but isn’t a fan, he loves trains though so he was brought one yesterday for being such a big boy. He takes that to bed with him.

Thank you! This gives me hope that there is light at the other side!
