Hi all, my 7 year old (year 3) fractured her arm just below the elbow on Thursday evening - put into a half cast? (Gaps left in case of swelling)....she's due to go to fracture clinic on Thursday for what I assume is a full cast? - having never broken a bone and being stupid not to ask on Friday when we were at the hospital - can she go to school in the morning?.....she's fine in herself, sleeping well, coping with the cast she has, and not complaining of pain.....thank you in advance x

It’ll come down to the school. They sometimes won’t take children in with the half/split casts or if held by wires etc.
glad she’s coping, and good luck 😊 would be a shame to miss the exciting few weeks ahead for her

Yes but don't just send her in by herself. I would go into the office with her first thing and talk to the staff so they know what they are facing. Its nothing they haven't dealt with countless times before.

When you say half cast do you mean backslab from hand to just below the shoulder or just below the elbow. If the latter, I'd keep her off. DS fractured about an inch above the wrist years ago, back slab to below elbow. It break moved and had to be reset and they said the break was sufficiently high to require a full arm cast. We were gung ho and let him have fun because we thought the cast was protective. It wasn't.

Contact school in the morning, they will need to do a risk assessment to make sure she can safely be in school

Thank you all, I'm so silly, I thought what was put on her Friday was "it" and that fracture clinic was just an x ray to make sure everything was in the right place so to speak....I feel so silly! It was only when I spoke to a friend who has broken her arm 11 times when little that she started mentioning the gaps etc. Can't believe the hospital didn't elaborate....ultimately its my fault for not asking though so glad i posted!! I will ring the school first thing in the morning to confirm the way forward, thank you everyone xx

We advise to stay off school until the first fracture clinic appointment. (Paediatric nurse)

Toddlerteaplease · 03/12/2023 18:53

And be very firm that she is not to do PE. We've had schools still insist children participate despite being on a cast. Wish I was joking.

Dunnoburt · 03/12/2023 18:59

Absolutely no PE.....surely that's a no brainer, that's awful! There are only 75 kids in her school so hopefully some common sense can be applied. Thank you also to @Toddlerteaplease all food for thought x

@Toddlerteaplease dd broke her collar bone aged 12. The PE teacher told her she had to change and help with the packing scoring etc. DD couldn't at the time carry her PE kit and changing would have been difficult, let alone if a ball had whacked her.

I was incandescent. Not least because I had contacted the school and explained that an orthopaedic surgeon had said no PE. The gym teacher thought she knew better.
