Is this really allowed?

I’m not considering this just asking as I’ve seen it suggested before. But are teachers really allowed to babysit for parents? Is that just one of those things people say that isn’t true? I would be amazed if teachers were allowed to babysit for parents. I’m not talking nursery staff but actual school teachers. (Not considering asking)

I imagine not

BuffaloCauliflower · 03/12/2023 12:39

There’s no reason they can’t if they wanted to and were paid for it. Why would it not be allowed? I’ve only heard of nursery staff offering babysitting on the side though.

modgepodge · 03/12/2023 12:40

I can’t see why it wouldn’t be allowed? I know teachers who tutor in their spare time, including pupils from their own school, so is this any different? As a parent, I’d feel a lot better leaving my child with a known teacher than a random babysitter I didn’t know. As a teacher, i wouldn’t want to do it personally but not sure why it’s different to nursery staff doing it.

Just thought teachers wouldn’t be able to have personal contact with parents and visit their homes but maybe I was wrong which is why I’m asking.

My DC's former teachers' older teenage dc used to babysit our DC.

Octavia64 · 03/12/2023 12:55

Teacher.

I've never heard of it being banned.

I've never heard of anyone doing it, either.

Seeline · 03/12/2023 12:55

Lots of teachers are already friends with parents, or teachers' children are friends with their pupils. Should they just cancel friendships?

Of course they visit houses etc

LittleBlueUnicorn · 03/12/2023 12:57

Probably my area then as I don’t know anyone who is friends with teachers at my kids school (I mean teachers from the school your kids go to not friends that are teachers) but none of the parents I know from DC school are personal friends with the teachers but it’s a large school in London so maybe that’s the difference?

Happens a lot in the sen community - teaching assistants mainly acting as respite carers. I have 3 friends that do it. They are paid via a short breaks / respite allowance from the council. A lot of TAs enjoy it as they know the children and it gives them an extra income.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 03/12/2023 17:45

It would not be allowed at my school - same for tutoring.

LittleBlueUnicorn · 03/12/2023 18:43

Was starting to feel like the only one, my school isn’t a small village school where everyone knows the teachers I don’t know anyone who has a personal friendships outside of school with any of the teachers

This is the only time I’ve experienced it as well

In 20 years of working in schools I’ve never known any teachers babysit.

When I ran a holiday playscheme a couple of teachers would volunteer for a day or two - especially those who were particularly arty or sporty. But not babysitting.

In DD4’s SEN school a few of the TAs do respite or babysitting, but not the teachers.

Mon to Fri is quite enough thanks!

MizzMarple · 03/12/2023 18:54

I don’t know any teachers who would babysit but that’s more because they don’t have the time or need the money but we use a TA at my son’s school as a babysitter all the time.
