Quick advice needed - carrying baby!

We're already on our way out so any quick thoughts from experienced parents appreciated!

We have a rather cute nine week old and are popping out to get some bits at a local shop. We'll be in there for half an hourish.

She's in a snowsuit, hat and is super warm - could I just carry her around in my arms rather than getting the pram out?

I'm thinking it's not that different to baby wearing when it comes to warmth and she is much happier being held than being in the car seat.

Any thoughts are welcome - we'll get there in 10 minutes or so!

I think is it's for a short time, and you are able to comfortably hold her and support her head while shopping then it's fine. You could also try a sling if easier? I agree pushchairs are a faff!

The only issue is if you need your hands free. A sling would be ideal as carrying a baby for an hour and a half solid could get a bit much. I’d probably take the pram (use it to barge through the Christmas crowds and a place for bags too).

But just keep pushchair in car in case you are delayed or want to stay out for other things (always happens to me!)

She'll be fine from a warmth perspective but I wouldn't want to carry a baby for half an hour in a shop myself.

Thanks both! I'm not flying solo today so I won't need to carry anything or use my hands for anything but holding her. Will only be in there for half an hour which isn't too long usually.

The sling I've got is just a teeny bit big for her at the moment but can't wait to start using it in a few weeks!

I wouldn't feel confident carrying such a young baby for that length of time without a carrier. Warmth-wise I'm sure she'll be fine, but snowsuits in particular can make it quite difficult to maintain a solid grip. Just something to bear in mind.

Crisis averted - it was so busy in the shop (he had a look inside before I got out of the car) that we decided to turn around and get what we need online!

Handy to have your thoughts for future though, really appreciate people responding so quickly Flowers

Just to say, if you were driving there baby shouldn't be in a snowsuit in the carseat. Not sure if you meant you would put them in the snow suit whrn you got to the shop?

lljkk · 03/12/2023 13:38

I think OP was worrying about 5 minute walk from car to shop door, and 5 minute walk afterwards. Where 5 really means 1.

Oh goodness yes would never put her in a snowsuit in the car seat!

Get a stretchy wrap to carry her in for now. Do some sling research - I carried both of mine from birth and basically didn’t use the pram/buggy at all!

Superscientist · 03/12/2023 14:40

My daughter was not a fan of the pram and often had to put her in the sling if i had it or carry her if not. Snowsuits were absolutely the worst thing for carrying her and I had to stop every few steps. They are slippery, hold them more upright so they don't mould to you and around you waist. They are puffy so it's hard to grip around their waists.

A coat would be more than enough for a quick shop especially if you are driving. Or pop them into a trolly - our supermarket has the trolleys with a seat that baby can lie in
