Right I have 1 week off at Christmas, can I Potty Train in a week?

So this is the one week off I'm going to get in quite a while, dd is 2 and a half. Can it be done, can I potty train her in a week?

She has no interest in it currently but she does use weeing and pooing as a delay tactic at bedtime. "Mummy I need to poo on the toilet" etc and she'll sit on the loo but she won't actually do anything while she's sat there!?!

Does anyone have any top tips for getting this sorted? I'd really llike to conquer it! at the same time I feel like I'm lining myself up for a stressful and miserable christmas!

Wow teabelly that's great .

DS has sucessfully done wees and poos on the loo now quite a few times but has never asked to go. He was desparate to be in 'big boy pants' on Monday and so I put him in them in the afternoon. We had 2 accidents but the last time he did say 'I'm doing a wee' so at least he recognised the feeling. Unfortunately he has been back in nappies ever since as we have not been home and he only went back to nursery yesterday. I think maybe this weekend we will give it a go and just be nappy free.

Wish me luck!!

Maudy, didn't see your mesage til today...how did it go? ...you could try the pull ups for when you have to be out and about. DS calls them his nappy pants, and we put them on him if we're travelling (esp as we have a 2 hour trip to see the relatives!) Again he asks to go before hand but they help to prevent any little accidents in the car seat when the warning is rather short notice!!

Suzy,
DD (2.5) toilet trained successfully last week, and had it pretty much licked by day 4.

We have tried and failed before. On previous attempts I have aborted mission on day one after 2 or 3 successive accidents.

This time around she grasped it almost immediately and had no more than one accident per day. She was given a chocolate minstrel for every successful attempt. I did nothing different this time around - she was merely 'ready'. There were no clear signs that she was 'ready' - I just tried it with her and it clicked. Although she does keep repeating proudly "I'm a big girl now" so perhaps suggesting to your child that big girls use the toilet might work for her.

I guess my point is - try periodically to toilet train. If it doesn't start to fall into place on day one (i.e. she does at least a two or three wees / poos on the toilet or potty on day one) then abort mission, and try again a few weeks later.

Same as previous poster really. I told dd 2 1/2 that after xmas when the decorations came down she would be wearing big girls knickers and no more nappies. Set up a sticker chart, happy faces for successful potty trips and black marker pen faces for accidents (no emphasis on negatives tho, just as a consequence for her actions) and a litle pot with a special treat (dry fruit chunks and yogurt coated raisins) every time she got a sticker on the chart. Kept it simple and explained it to her. Well, I was shocked at the immediate result!!

She went from total non compliance and denying all nappy usage to within a few days pulling down her trousers and knickers, weeing and coming and telling me. She is even pooing on the potty too. Although sometimes the poo starts arriving as she is telling me quick mummy its coming. No accidents to report of, except the odd little nugget before the rest is finished off in the potty. Just timing that one, and she still gets rewarded for trying to get there. She is so aware and will wee before and after a trip out. I just don't stay out longer than 2 hours in one go, just incase at the moment. But pretty much cracked it in a week. So I am really happy at the outcome.

Maudy · 15/01/2005 11:17

Well we still haven't quite cracked it and I'm not sure DS is quite ready. He has been in 'big boy pants' for a week now and although he has hardly had any accidents at nursery, maybe one or 2 a day, they do sit him in the potty every 20 mins or so so its hardly suprising. He never asks to go but will often produce something on the potty - poos and wees. He has been running round the house this morning without anything on his bottom half and although I have asked him repeatedly if he wants to go he has done one wee and one poo on the floor (he did also do one poo on the potty).

I'm thinking of putting him in to pull ups to help with the accidents but am worried it is a step back. I would have thought that after about a week or so he would have cracked it but he doesn't really seem any closer.

have you tried rewarding him? How old is he? The problem with pull ups, they are confusing to kids. Sends them mixed messages. They are too similar to a nappy in my mind.

I think racism is still fairly prevalent, albeit often rather subtle.

Less subtle was a few years back (8 or 9) when myself and an Asian boyfriend went to the Peak District for a weekend. Whilst looking for B&B accommodation on several occasions we would approach a place with a vacancy sign in the window, only for them to turn us away as they "didn't have any rooms" (yeah, right).

In Southampton (quite a multicultural city) I was crossing the road in the centre of town the other day after a motorist has kindly stopped to let me cross, - 2 lads were crossing at the same time and one guffawed loudly to the other "It's okay, he can wait - he's just a paki"

(they meant the driver of the car...)
