When did your period return after breastfeeding?

I was wondering if I could get people’s experiences on when your period returned during or post breastfeeding.

DH is now 9 months and I’m winding down breastfeeding, only offering at bedtime, overnight (if she wakes) and first thing. The day feeds are now formula so there’s a good 12 hours usually between the morning feed and the bedtime one.
I’ve been doing this for several weeks and had assumed my period would make an appearance but nothing.

So I’m wondering if you breastfed did your period come back while you were feeding or did it only come back once you’d stopped entirely?

I hope this is the right topic, first time posting so sorry if I’m in the wrong place!

DC were both 8 months old when I got a period but I was still bf and did till 14 months.

Bunny2006 · 30/11/2023 19:31

I had a period (fairly heavy, 5 days usual length) the day after she slept through the night one time at 7 months! But then nothing, she usually feeds 3-4 times in the day and 1 overnight with the odd night of no feeds, until just now at 10 months after a few nights of no overnight feeds

AnneLovesGilbert · 30/11/2023 19:37

4 months first time, 3 months second time. Very annoying. But I never get period pain anymore and they’re much shorter! 🙌

Chantal90 · 30/11/2023 19:39

Ah it sounds like everyone is totally different then!
I’ve been loving not having them but also I’d like to start TTC in the new year and was wondering if I would need to give up BF entirely

This is all really helpful though, makes me feel like there’s nothing wrong with me

8-9 months both times, which coincided with them getting the hang of solids.

LylaLee · 30/11/2023 19:42

I think I literally got a period when DC was 6 weeks old. Ebf.

LittleBlueUnicorn · 30/11/2023 19:42

5 weeks each time despite ebf

Morag273 · 30/11/2023 19:43

18 months

MargotBamborough · 30/11/2023 19:43

For me it was at 11.5 months postpartum, after I cut down to breastfeeding twice a day.

MargotBamborough · 30/11/2023 19:44

Oh and I deliberately cut down because I wanted to TTC again.

Elzibells · 30/11/2023 19:44

DD was EBF, my period returned after 1 year. She has just self weaned at 3.5years old, upto this point she was having milk on demand. I had regular periods once they restarted.

No, we're all different.

I didn't love getting mine back after a year (with nine months of breastfeeding). I was in absolute agony with my back and they refused to crack it back into place until I'd started my periods again.

Why? Because of painkillers?

TheZenOne22 · 30/11/2023 19:47

I was EBF and period came back after 3.5/4 months. I was gutted. Thought I wouldn’t get it back until I stopped. Luckily they don’t hurt like they used to - still heavy though!

Pollywoddles · 30/11/2023 19:49

Coming up to 21 months and still no sign of it. I’m still feeding on demand and she’s up at least twice a night though.

MiseryGutt · 30/11/2023 19:50

8 months.

TheHawkisHowling · 30/11/2023 19:51

Your ligaments are a lot more pliable from pregnancy and apparently that continues until you get back onto a normal cycle. So they didn't want to crack it and potentially break something else.

TheHawkisHowling · 30/11/2023 19:54

I can still feel the relief from that back cracking. It was one of the best days of my life.

But why until stopping breastfeeding, rather than x months after childbirth?

EllieLC · 30/11/2023 19:57

First baby 3 months whilst ebf and second baby 6 weeks whilst ebf.

Thislife1 · 30/11/2023 20:00

2 months while exclusively breast feeding. Very annoying.

PurBal · 30/11/2023 20:00

Mine came back after we introduced solids at about 9 months but I breastfed until 12. My sister is 18 months into breastfeeding and no cycle (they want another baby).
