5yo wetting at school

DS is 5 (nearly 6) and he has been wetting his pants at school for several months now. He’s in his first year. Doesn’t wet in any other circumstance (dry at night since he toilet trained at 3), though he has wet a couple of times when absorbed in play at a friends house on a farm, and while watching tv a couple of times.

We have tried everything! Tried asking teacher to take him to toilet regularly, tried making a plan with him to go before morning tea and lunch - talked about it, tried ignoring it…but it’s still happening at least twice a week. We always pack a change of shorts and undies with a wet bag, and he used to change - but now he’s found that he can wet his uniform shorts and they dry quickly so he doesn’t need to tell us and tries to lie about it - but of course the smell gives it away.

I don’t think it’s a uti or medical as he’s dry at home - I think it’s just that he gets too busy with play and leaves it too late?

Just want to hear from mums who have been there…and to hopefully hear that their kid just grew out of it?! Any tips? We are moving city soon and he will be starting a new school, and I don’t want him getting teased for smelling of wee or wetting :(

(ps. he was doing this before he knew about the move so I don’t think it’s anxiety about that)

my DD was exactly the same - she would have accidents at school a couple of times a week and for similar reasons - she would get distracted and leave it too late. She was about 6 years old when she grew out of it. As she was having the very occasional accident at home we took her to the GP and they confirmed that she didn't have a UTI. I think just making his new school aware - perhaps they can prompt him to go at the beginning of play time. There is some good advice on this website - https://eric.org.uk.

Talk to the teacher again so she doesn’t forget to prompt him before/after playtime. Also, is it a private school where he must wear those specific shorts? If not then put him in something that doesn’t dry as quickly, as at least that deals with the smell. And as long as you’re sure it’s not a UTI or medical issue then I would do a star chart- one star for every day he stays dry, 5 stars and he can have a treat at the weekend like a small lego set or something.
