Baby eczema

My 4 month old developed a red, slightly raised bumpy rash and dry patches. I sent photos to my doctors today and doctor said it was eczema.. I've tried aveeno baby care and aveeno dermexa and none seem to have worked. So doctor has prescribed an emollient cream which I'll collect from the chemist tomorrow which I'm hoping will help.

What creams have you found that have worked please?

We bath DD in oilatum which helps

Whatever you do, please don't use any steroid creams to control the eczema. I made that mistake and my little one went though topical steroid withdrawal, it was 100x worse than eczema 😭

We now use a bath soak product that we found on Etsy which has been really effective and controls his eczema.

Hopefully he will grow out of it.

Try Dolly & Friends Calming Cream. It has finger lime caviar, which is great for eczema. It’s also organic and made specially for children.

We used a steroid cream as well as a prescribed emollient. It only cleared up the skin for a short time though, and DS was subsequently diagnosed with Cow's Milk Protein Allergy. Once we cut out dairy it cleared up completely.

It's a bit trial and error with creams – what works for one person's eczema doesn't work for another. DD2 didn't get on at all with Cetraben, but QV works brilliantly for her (also used instead of soap in her bath). Child's Farm moisturiser is second best for her. At least to start with, you need to use the cream a lot – DD2 gets problem areas done every nappy change, and full body twice a day, and that's not extreme. If baby is dribbling or has a cold, you'll probably need to use cream on their face what feels like every five minutes.

Don't bath baby more than you need to, once a week is probably enough at that age, and pat the skin dry, don't rub. Cotton or other natural fibres next to the skin, things like fleecy sleepsuits may irritate.

If the doctor does think baby needs a short course of steroid cream after trying emollients, I would listen. DD2 has needed a medium strength steroid at various points, but it's always time-limited – the dermatologist was very clear than letting the eczema go on and on will do more damage to the skin than a short course of steroid cream. The short time frame or taking regular breaks with a longer regime really reduces the risk of withdrawal symptoms.

@AlisonWonderbra

Can I ask what other symptoms your little one had? That has crossed my mind with mine too..

Careful with aveeno products. My friends son had eczema but it turned out he also had an oat allergy and he reacted to aveeno which made his skin so much worse.

No other symptoms whatsoever.

Goats milk soap worked wonders for my son when he was small. Be very careful with steroid creams as they sometimes do more harm than good

Daffodil0407 · 30/11/2023 22:47

Hi @LucyStar1 thanks for replying!
Trying to stay avoid steroids if possible! What was the withdrawal like? X

Thanks @skkyelark I went back to doctors today as it seemed to have gotten a lot worse. The doctor we saw don't actually think it's eczema and said it could be because his still young and his natural oils are coming out.... doesn't make any sense to me really.. have an appt in 10 days time to review
