Here we go again…cold number 6348 of the season

Just turned 3yo. Asked for a tissue a couple of times before bed. Down like a dream at 7.30pm as usual. Currently 10.10pm and he’s been up 4 times already 😭 he’s full of the cold. So snotty and just miserable.

And so the cycle begins again. He gets ill and can’t sleep so either wants held upright all night or wants into my bed. Hes awake constantly through the night tossing and turning. Lying cuddles right into my face. He’s awful for a few days then starts to recover. By this point I’m so sleep deprived and run down that his cold hits me like a tonne of bricks and it takes me twice as long to recover 😬🙄 I’ve only been clear of the last one for about 2 weeks 🙈

Please tell me it’s not just this house 😅 No real point in the post. I just need to vent 😬

It unfortunately is fairly common. Definitely worth trying Vit D, multivitamins and echinacea for you. Check advice for children as I’m out of date with little ones.
Maybe get an electric diffuser and use eucalyptus oil or I have seen that calpol have brought out a plug in diffuser.
It’s rotten seeing your lo suffer, get hardly any sleep, put up with crap weather and short days to only then get ill yourself.

Vicks Vapor rub on te soles of the feet for the toddler the socks on. Very good to aid with breathing.

Where do you think you breathe from?!

I don’t understand.

The colds are normal. It's unlucky that it impacts your sleep so much.

I'd try to find a way to sleep alongside him but not in the same bed. Maybe you could have a camp bed on his floor or he has one on your floor. You could maybe get one of those big bean bags and see if he'll sleep better in that, you can mould it so he's upright. Or something similar that allows him to sleep more upright, even a buggy if you still have one.

Other than it's just capol, cough medicine, vapour rub (on his chest, not feet), olbas oil on his pillow, one of those vapour plug ins etc.

I don’t understand.

Well that much is clear!

To aid breathing vapour rub needs to be in the vicinity of the mouth/nose...where you breathe from.

Vapour rub on your feet isn't going to help you breathe. Unless you sleep with your feet next to your head I suppose.

@NuffSaidSam It’s a reflexology trick. It works, try it.

Sure.

But if you are looking after a sick child, do pop some on their chest too. Just to help the foot vapour rub along.

bogoblin · 24/11/2023 08:01

Solidarity! We have it too - 3yo coughed so hard he was sick all in my bed 😩 we somehow managed to move him and strip and change the sheets without waking our one year old though!

Hopefully they get better soon!

Has your child's nursery got any clean air plan in place? Does it monitor indoor CO2, does it regularly ventilate the room with open windows, does it run air purifiers? Do you also ventilate your house?

The combination of children's immune systems being damaged by multiple bouts of COVID, and exposure to other people's exhaled virus, makes them very susceptible to continual infection. Clean indoor air makes a difference. Talk to your nursery/school, show them the research. Clean air pays for itself in reduced staff sick leave.

C02 indoors should be below 800ppm, above that it becomes a cognitive and health hazard https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/jul/08/indoor-carbon-dioxide-levels-could-be-a-health-hazard-scientists-warn

schools randomised to the HEPA filter arm of the study are reported to have had “illness rates over 20% lower than those in the non-HEPA arm”

It's not just your house. We've had back to back colds here for 6 weeks and I'm exhausted. Calpol plug-in definitely does help though. Solidarity.

wishIwasonholiday10 · 24/11/2023 12:20

I also know how you feel! We’ve had back to back colds and fevers too over the last few months. We just got through a viral fever where DD (16 months) would only sleep upright on one of us for 8 nights - absolutely exhausting and I’ve had the last few colds too and am felling quite run down. I’ve been off work more often than at work and when I have managed to go to work have been too exhausted to do my job. I hope it improves for all of us soon!

Inyourwildestdreams · 24/11/2023 20:27

@AussieManque House is ventilated well. DS doesn’t attend nursery yet. I’ll have a read through the research, thank you!

Sorry for all those in the same boat 😷🤧 hopefully it doesn’t last too long!
