Child continues to be so poorly (posted similar in july)

Pudding20 · 22/11/2023 17:48

I posted back in july about DD poorly every two weeks.
They started nursery in September and has had a cough since the first week, multiple doctors visits and eventually after two months we were given an inhaler and antibiotics.
Last week I called an ambulance and after 11 hours it was confirmed community pneumonia.
I am beyond fed up of the constant sleepless nights and my child being unwell, anyone else had a child that is constantly poorly. Not enjoying being a parent and makes me so sad

Unfortunately it's a rite of passage for all children as they start nursery, school etc - building immunity & exposed to lots of children , different viruses etc.

I feel like i have a new born :( up every hour in the night or on their floor so they settle better, hubby works away some weeks as well. Just want it to done with.
She only started nursery in sept but been going on since April! So unfair for her them to be constantly poorly

This was why I gave up work in the end ! It just wasn’t working then when dd got a diagnosis of ASD it meant I could claim carers and UC as she was literally unwell every other week it was a nightmare

I had this last year. It was awful. I felt like I was going insane through lack of sleep and anxiety and no one else’s DC seemed to be as sick as often.
it’s not helpful to hear right now but it does get better.
we had it from April - November every two weeks and it was brutal. I didn’t believe it would get better. But we’ve now had a wave of health since end of July up until today when DC developed a cough and threw up.

hang on in there, its a horrid horrid phase but it happens to a lot of them and is actually good for their immune systems.

Oh gosh sounds like what we are going through and i am constantly on edge, anxious the DD will throw up (fear of vomit doesnt help)
Good to hear it eventually ends just cant see the light at the end of the tunnel at the moment, feel constantly down and snapping at husband when he is home from a week away.
I just can't understand how it goes on for so long yet other kids on nursery seem fine

We kept waiting thinking ‘immunity will build up’ and it just didn’t . Hand foot and mouth was the worst as dd had been unwell the week prior and then all the spots got infected it was hell. She couldn’t even wear shoes for 2 weeks as the blisters on her feet had been so bad , then she got norovirus not long after and that was the final straw for us

Pizzaandsushi · 22/11/2023 22:03

It will improve!
like a pp, I thought I was going to collapse from the amount of illnesses my baby caught and I caught from him.
he started nursery in September a year ago and both him and myself were home sick most of the cold and flu season. I actually didn’t go into work a single day in December.
I knew children got sick at nursery but I didn’t think it would be as bad as it was. it was relentless.
Gastro 4-5 times, rsv that led to bronchiolitis and an ambulance trip with hospital stay, so many colds and coughs with hourly wakeups, I stopped counting and as I said, I caught every single thing as well, including bacterial sinusitis.
It was the only time of his life so far that I co-slept with him. Not because we slept better but because I was having to attend to him so frequently. Everything came with a fever too. Bottles of calpol were used and there were days/weeks I actually wanted to have an accident so I could go to hospital and get some rest.
Fast forward a year and apart from a permanently snotty nose, he has only needed one day off with a fever from respiratory virus and I’ve barely caught anything.
just keep pushing through. You will get there!

Oh my days, im nearly in tears reading what you have been through!!!

I got to a point in the last two months i was sick of been told DD is a child what do you expect, then to have to get an ambulance and told its a type of pneumonia just made me feel so down that as a mum i should of pushed harder sooner!!!

Then to have antibiotics and still suffering it just feels relentless, thank you for sharing what you have been through it does give a little hope that it doesnt last forever. Im done with 2023 and all the snot, temps and mucus it brought with it

I remember this stage , although not as extreme as some of the PP. My child had a constant cold, cough and just generally snotty for his first year or so at nursery..He ended up at hospital for pneumonia on one occasion which wasn't nice. It gets better, hang on in there, that first year is awful but it will be building her immunity

Pizzaandsushi · 23/11/2023 06:08

@Pudding20 oh I can relate. I got asked often by GPs if this was my first child and to basically go away and get on with it so when it came to the day he had chest recessions instead of taking him to the hospital like I wanted to, I walked to a walk-in centre to not even be in triage 2 minutes before they whisked us through and called and ambulance. I felt awful because I knew something wasn’t right but had been constantly made to feel like I was overreacting. I felt like I had let him down.
It doesn’t just feel relentless. It IS relentless but it won’t last forever. As hard as it is, just focus on the day ahead. Not about next week or anything further than getting through one day at a time.

Thank you!
Tonight DD got a temp at bedtime and of course my anxiety has gone through the roof, im on edge and just cannot believe not even finished her antibiotics and is snotty and got a temp.
Feels like punishment and her poor little self must feel rubbish as well that she just cant feel well for more than a day or two.
Would love yo know how people cope with a poorly child but then go on to have more kiddies, fills me with more dread the thought of doing it again

My DS has just turned one. He has been minded one on one by a family member in our own home since I returned to work, so no nursery. Still, he has been sick pretty much constantly since September. Vommitting bug, teething, vommitting bug and cold combo, teething again and another teething and cold combo at the moment. We have pretty much caught everything from him too so we are obviously all building up immunity. We have not slept in a month straight essentially!

It might not make you feel better but, just know, although nursery is a germ sharing haven, they still seem to pick up all these illnesses from thin air. I think it's less about nursery and just their first year or two of life and they pick up and bug within a 25km radius.

Aww so sorry to hear this.

DD was born weeks before lockdown and didnt mix with anyone so we felt lucky to not have her suffer in a sense.
Now she is nearly 4 and has been ill every two to three weeks since april, started school nursery in September and just seems to have heightened the severity as she was in hospital last week with pneumonia.
Its just sad they get no relief and im trying to find a solution for my crippling anxiety at any slight illness

Oh OP I hear you!
We have had a horrific year for illnesses, and it has given me health anxiety that I've never had before.
At the start of the year we had multiple sickness bugs, covid, impetigo, flu, ear infections all in about 3 months.
Also just seem to be in another wave of viruses.
It's absolutely wicked and draining and I really feel for you 🩷
