Chicken pox vaccine & 12 month immunisations

Has anyone had both the chicken pox vaccine and 12 month imms. on the same day?

My DD has had her first chicken pox dose, and I’m considering having her second dose on the same day as her routine NHS vaccines.

Superdrug’s website states this is ok, but is it mean to give 5 injections on one day? Is it too much for her immune system? It would mean an appointment at the GP, then a drive to Boots for the CP vaccine, so a short delay rather than all over with in one appointment.

I was told to leave 4 weeks between the varicella vaccine and MMR. I had dose 1 of varicella, 4 weeks later MMR, then 4 weeks after that dose 2 of varicella. I think in the US they give it all together as standard though? We might have used a different brand.

I asked the practice nurse at DS’ 12 month jabs, and she recommended leaving 4 weeks before getting varicella because that and the MMR are both live vaccines.

Thanks both. As she’s already started the chicken pox course I think I’ll get that finished and then follow on with the standard 12 month imms. in the new year.

Did both on the same day, first dose of chicken pox with the 12 month one. I did feel a bit guilty as it was a lot in one day but all went fine

Hi @GodspeedJune

Just wondering how your little one got on with the chicken pox vaccine if you don’t mind me asking please?

My 12m old seems to get every virus going and now he’s at nursery we definitely want him to get the chicken pox vaccine. He had his 12m immunisations yesterday so I know that we now need to wait 4 weeks, but did your LO get any side effects at all? Wondering if he will also have to stay off nursery once he has had it, but will ask the nursery that.

Thank you!

We gave all on the same day both times. Neither child had any side effects beyond usual post vaccine grump. They didn’t have to stay off nursery. And neither ever got chickenpox!

We went for two doses and each time her only symptom was a runny nose for a day or two. That was it! No temp or feeling under the weather. I’d definitely give it again to future DC.

@GodspeedJune oh that’s great news thank you, especially no temp! Will be getting it booked in asap, seems like a no brainer to avoid how nasty chicken pox could be

Cdoc · 16/03/2024 10:44

@JustASquareMoreChocolate that’s good to know on the nursery front thank you! My little one got a fever during the night after the 12m vaccines yesterday, but just serves as a reminder why it’s so good to be vaccinated as getting the actual illnesses would be so much worse for him. Getting that chicken pox one booked asap!

You can either have both on the same day or leave 4 weeks between them.
