hi, my dd, is 9 months in 2 wks, or should i just say 8 and a half months.

anyway, she is still not sitting, she does everything else, crawls [only been doing this a couple of weeks]
she seems very happy and healthy, she sleeps and eats well and is full of smiles.

just got back from a check up at the dr's [6-9month review]
and he's circled the o and p section in the red book on the locomotion.
posture,tone and motor development
o= observation
p= problem significant condition on record!

he did also say shes in great shape.

i thought they could just get there in their own good time, or should i be worried
it doesn't seem to good to have, significant condition on record, in dds red book.

from the sounds of it she's much more focused on other motility - she's crawling. In my group of friends babies there were those who focused on sitting, those who focused on rolling and those who focused on crawling - all totally normal, but each reaching these things at different times. My DS sat unsupported at 4.5 months but he didn't roll till over a year and crawled at 10 months.

my dd didn't sit up till 9 months or crawl till 13 months but she's running round and climbing stairs and everything now (22 months). i wouldn't worry.

PrettyCandles · 12/03/2008 16:23

My first two LOs crawled at 8/8.5m, and sat up a couple of weeks after that. The way they learned to sit up was by getting into a crawl and then walking their hands backward. My third did this as well, though he started much earlier. Apparently a lot of LOs learn to sit first, and then to crawl from sitting, so people who haven't seen it the other way around think that there is something wrong. There isn't - they are just all individuals.

lionbeast · 12/03/2008 16:26

thanks everyone, i wasn't that worried till the dr wrote that in her red book.
weegle, thats what i thought, if shes already crawling and has been for about 2 weeks, so since she was 8 months, that seems quite early to me, so why are they going on about her not sitting when she can crawl?

thanks hellsbells. ive just been trying to get dd to sit but she just crawls off !

from her point of view, crawling is probably a LOT more interesting than sitting! ;)

lionbeast · 12/03/2008 16:29

thanks pretty candles, ive just been looking it up, well delvelopment milestones and ive just read that most babies sit before they can crawl, as they learn to crawl from a sitting position.
perhaps dd thinks just sitting is boring!

dt2 did'nt sit alone til she was 14 months, even though she could crawl and walk around furniture, gp hv and physiotherapist were baffled as they could find nothing wrong, she is 4 now and perfectly fine.

lionbeast · 12/03/2008 16:46

thank you total eclipse, you are all making me feel much less worried, perhaps the dr just had to note it, as procedure or somthing, it does say ring one circle and hes put the circle over both. there doesn't seem anything wrong with her to me.

total eclipse, when did you have to see a physio etc? at what age?

I cant remember exactly, but it was around 12 months.

lionbeast · 12/03/2008 16:50

thanks totaleclipse

perhaps i should of started this thread with pfb alert !

i think he just wants to keep an eye on it.
however, i did teach my kids to sit up. put them with cushions all round to support them and they sort of eventually stopped falling down so much.
if baby is crawling it proby isnt really a problme. just they want to keep an eye on it. because, dont forget, that is the last usual check they ahve now.

lionbeast · 12/03/2008 17:48

i think ive not really been helping as i haven't really shown dd what to do or encouraging her to sit, as we have hard wooden floors an im scared she will crack her head.
i know i can show her with cushions but im im just worried she start doing it then falling over.

anyway anyone know anygood links to development milestones websites ? ive only seen baby centre

she has to fall over, otherwise where is the incentive for her to learn how to control her back muscles?
when little, putting them in the corner of the sofa with cushions in front of them, and you next to them works well.
on the floor, with cushions, pillows anything soft basically, around them is all that is needed. dd learnt how to sit whilst we weree staying at my dsis house. she has all marble floors. cushions, pillows, and watchful eye are all that were needed

crokky · 12/03/2008 18:28

My DS could not sit at that age. He learnt to sit fairly soon afterwards, I wouldn't worry.

lionbeast · 12/03/2008 20:36

oh thanks everyone, i know sh has to learn to fall over, thanks for the great advice pukka.

i think if i got my way she would be wrapped in cotton wool.

i will try the sofa thing too.

OP posts:
pukkapatch · 13/03/2008 08:03

if she is already crawling, then the sofa corner may be too dangerous.
tbh, if she is already crawling, then it means she has the muscle control, but is only not sitting because she hasnt had the opportunity to do so. sort of like not being able to ride a bike because you havent had the oppurtunity to. not because you are incapable. iyswim.
dont wrap her in cotton wool. you will be doing more harm than good.

Notyummy · 13/03/2008 08:28

Hi, its me again lionbeast! Sounds like you got lots of good advice here. My dd was the opposite to yours i.e did the sitting (quite early) and then crawling....BUT she got very frustrated just sitting and desperately wanted to crawl long before she could! She crawled about 8 1/2 to 9 months I think, but had been frantically rocking backwards and forwards and squealing furiously for at least 2 months before that...it was a tiring time for all concerned! It sounds like your dd is doing it the other way round...and at least you may avoid the frustration thing! I also did the cushions thing when she was learning to sit. I actually used to put her on her padded play mat, which was on some carpet and leave her there. I have some video footage of her at exactly 5 months sitting on the mat and then slowly losing concentration and control and disappearing over backwards...she was absolutely fine and just lay they looking a bit mystified as to how she got there

Perhaps an extra visit to the health visitor to discuss what the doctor wrote might help? She may have seen more babies doing things in a different order than the doctor has.

Alishanty · 13/03/2008 08:41

I wouldn't worry. My ds has always been a very active baby. He got everywhere by rolling from 5 mths and then crawling at 8.5 mths. He didn't really sit properly unssupported until 10 mths. He was never the sit on the floor and play with toys type of child, he always wanted to be on the move, exhausting for me lol! If your lo is active in other ways I really wouldn't worry, she will sit up in her own time.
