Baby self weaning from breast

My 3 month old baby has become fussy with breastfeeding. He constantly latches and unlatches then cries. Whatever he drinks he vomits back up. When I took him to be weighed he’d dropped on the chart. So I decided to begin combi feeding and he’s taken really well to bottles and formula, no vomiting and seems happier and settled. If I pump breastmilk and feed him it in a bottle he vomits it so there is clearly an issue somewhere with the milk I am producing. I’m really upset by it as I wanted to exclusively breastfeed for as long as possible as I didn’t get the chance with my dd when my milk dried up suddenly one day. I am making plenty of milk this time, I’m always leaking and can pump a full bottle in minutes. He just doesn’t want it. The last breastfeed will be very emotional for me. He’s my last baby and I’ve enjoyed the close bond through breastfeeding.
Can anyone shed light on what has gone wrong? And also how you managed emotionally when you knew it was time to stop?
Any tips to avoid mastitis as my milk dries up would be appreciated too.

What's your diet like? Could be something that you've ate that's causing her to bring it back up

ChatBFP · 20/11/2023 09:14

It's either a diet thing, or possibly the fact that baby has reflux and formula is heavier - what happens if you put gaviscon into the breastmilk bottle, as a temporary solution whilst you keep a good diary?

Doeisrain · 20/11/2023 14:28

He can keep down formula no problem, with or without gaviscon.
my diet is quite high in fat and calcium, i do have a few ‘unhealthy’ snacks a day but otherwise I’m generally healthy. I read about a cows milk allergy, would this only show with breastmilk?
Ive also heard about tongue tie and only being noticeable if you breast feed. How would I know if this is a cause?

Would it be possible for you to speak to a breastfeeding counsellor or a lactation consultant? They will help you investigate what is going on. It is very likely you can continue to breastfeed for as long as you want and any issues like reflux or a tongue tie can be overcome with. Fussiness and pulling on and off the breast can be really normal in a 3 month old. It can be stimulating behaviours to try and trigger another let down and up your milk supply.

If you're giving dairy formula and he tolerates this, it won't be a milk allergy

Wrongsideofpennines · 20/11/2023 15:03

It won't be a dairy allergy if he is tolerating formula. It is possible It is something else though. You might be able to eliminate it from your diet which would mean you could continue feeding.

Please get some help if you want to continue breastfeeding. You could ring the national Breastfeeding Helpline, La Leche League or speak to your health visitor. You might not need to give up completely if you don't want to.

Babies can drop centiles, he may just be settling on the one that's right for him. Unless he is dropping dramatic amounts of weight at every weigh in, or not gaining at all I wouldn't be massively worried just yet. Does he through up a full feed at the breast every time, or just a little? What are his nappies like, skin etc? If it's an allergy there might be more symptoms.

The fact that he vomits with breastmilk is highly suspicious for allergy and would be worth trying to figure out what it is before he starts solids. Must be something that isn’t in formula, it’s most likely to be a protein. Maybe egg? Could try elimination diet if you want to continue feeding
