Sickness/diarrhoea/rotavirus lasting over 2 weeks in 2YO

My 2YO DD started with a vomiting bug 2 weeks ago. She had a typical 48 hour vomiting bug with no diarrhoea and no fever. This then subsided but the diarrhoea started. Getting progressively worse. 7 days after her first episode of vomiting she began to vomit again. This only lasted 6 hours and stopped but the diarrhoea again carried on getting worse happening daily. She has then started vomiting again over the last 2 days. About 7 episodes in 48 hours. Diarrhoea is continuing throughout. Gp has taken stool sample and waiting in results, he has said it is very normal and bugs can last for 3-4weeks! Has anyone else experienced this? The DR suggested rotavirus maybe? I’m terrified it’s something sinister but the vomiting and diarrhoea together does suggest it is stomach upset. She’s on and off in herself and hasn’t had a fever throughout. We are exhausted and I really feel so awful for my daughter!

You can get secondary lactose intolerance and dairy intolerances after sickness bugs

Some bugs do take longer to clear than others my mil in the summer had one that lasted 2-3 weeks

My daughter had rotavirus at around 18 months and it lasted 2 weeks. It was such a worrying time. We took her to A&E at one point but there was nothing anyone could do but keep her hydrated. Good luck.

We’ve still got sick - day 18 now. Still awaiting stool sample. Did she seem ok inbetween episodes? I’m just so worried and the GP seems to think it’s normal.

That sounds so rough OP. My DS had rotavirus back in the day when there wasn’t a vaccination . In hospital for a week but still had the runs for a few weeks after that, but the vomiting stopped before. A few years ago DGS had the rotavirus vaccine and was actually more poorly and distressed from that than my DS was with the actual virus.

I hope it starts to settle whatever it is. But don’t be frightened to call your GP or get out of hours advice if you are worried. I think we expect these things to be like noro and over in a few days, but some viruses that hit the digestive system can linger on.

i think it’s so ingrained in us that it should be 48 hours and done when something like this happens it floors us.
she did have a solid bowel movement so I naively thought things were getting better, I was obviously wrong :(

I feel for you it is so hard not to worry. It was over 5 years. ago but I think her loose bowels did go into a 3rd week but not the vomiting. She had the rotavirus vaccine but was unlucky and picked up a strain that wasn't covered by it. She was relatively ok in between episodes.

Sounds like a carbon copy of my daughter - we’ve had a solid bowel movement but then 4 episodes of vomiting. stool sample clear so it’s viral. I’ve never known vomiting can go on this long with such long gaps between episodes.
