2 year old with mouth ulcers

Hi all,

Back in September we had an awful 2 weeks where our 2yo had a mouth full of ulcers which were understandably very painful and she pretty much refused 2 eat or drink anything for 2 weeks despite calpol, ibuprofen and difflam spray.

We're now in November and in the last few days her tongue has covered itself in ulcers again and she's a very unhappy girl again.

Does anybody have any recommendations

Thanks

Personally, I'd ring 111 or at least find a Pharmacy that's open and ask to speak to the Pharmacist. It's not usual in my experience for little ones to have so many mouth ulcers.

My daughter's first "cold sore" presented in this way. We were abroad at the time and took her to the local hospital and were told it was herpes (cold sore virus). They gave her some medicated lollipops, not sure whether that's an option here in UK?

wyse · 19/11/2023 10:11

Dentist here. It's most likely viral. Primary herpes or hand, foot and mouth. Poor wee thing. Such a miserable condition.

Lots of fluids, calpol, monitor temperature. Antibiotics won't help unfortunately. A dentist or doctor might confirm a diagnosis but it's likely you guys will just have to ride it out.

If it keeps reoccurring with no associated temperature then I'd speak to a doctor.

I'm going to have to call gp first thing as pharmacy just suggested what we're already trying.

@uhtredsonofuhtred1 I'm not convinced it's cold sore as none of us get them so don't know how she would have been exposed to them. Never heard of a medicated lollipop here though.
Currently got a completely miserable little one who's not really eating or drinking and is barely passing any urine

@wyse no spots on hands or feet so don't think hand foot and mouth. Neither her dad or I get cold sores no not convinced its that either.
She feels quite warm but no temp according to thermometer.

Think I'm going to call gp first thing as barely eating or drinking anything today.
The end of her tongue is completely covered in ulcers.
Interestingly she saw dentist on Monday and all looked absolutely fine then

@Roxyrocks hi OP. I know it's been a while since you posted this but wondering how your toddler got on in the end? My 2.5 year old son is experiencing exactly the same thing. Ulcers all over his tongue/mouth so he hasn't been eating or drinking. Had him in a&e today, they gave him some spray to numb it. They didn't know why he had them but all they said was didn't seem to be HFM as hands and feed clear. He's struggling to much, I hope it'll get better! ❤️‍🩹

Hand foot and mouth? You can have it repeatedly I believe, and mouth ulcers are a symptom. I hope she feels better soon!

bigheartlittleheart · 22/10/2024 21:20

@KittyEmK thank you for your reply! The paediatrician didn't seem to think it was hand foot and mouth as he had nothing on his hands and feet. No temp either. I really thought it was that.. tbh I'd be relieved with a diagnosis as otherwise I'm worried why he has ulcers! It's so awful, he's really struggling. ❤️‍🩹

Hi, yes it turns out she was terribly anaemic (currently under haematology as it drops back to being low again quickly after coming off iron supplements)
Definitely worth asking for a blood test as apparently it's quite common with anaemia x

Just a thought - I get terrible mouth ulcers sometimes, because I am allergic to sodium lauryl sulphate which is in loads of toothpastes, there are only a handful of types I can use. I had this as a child and I think it was only linked to the allergy in late childhood. Last week I brushed my teeth a few times using travel toothpaste in an emergency and I now have 3 ulcers.

Maybe worth switching toothpaste to see if it makes a difference. Obviously seek medical help too, just wanted to offer this as an idea.

bigheartlittleheart · 24/10/2024 21:58

Thank you @Roxyrocks ! That is really helpful. He's not the best with food so good very well be a deficiency. He's a little better today... GP will see him for a follow up next week - he said we can discuss arranging a possible blood test! Thanks again! ❤️‍🩹🙏🏻

@Chocolaterocketcake thank you! We use a jack n Jill toothpaste - it's one of the more natural ones that contains no fluoride so I think it's ok. Hasn't been a problem until now and he's 2.5. 🙏🏻❤️‍🩹

Hey

I know it’s been a while since you’ve posted.

I came across your thread and comment about seeing the dentist and wonder if you think it could be related?

my daughter who is 18 months had a dental check up last a week ago. For the last few days she’s been very dribbly, not eating much, crying at night and very hot.. I put it down to teething but I have just seen she has blistered around where the dentist touched her with her gloves (around front lip and end of tongue) that’s as much as we could manage due to little ones protesting.. I’m wondering has she had a reaction to the gloves.

She’s had hand foot and mouth in the past and it’s different.

thanks x
