Hello all.
My DS will be 9 months at Christmas. Solo parent here, so not got the money to go crazy, but would like to buy one nice wooden toy that he could start to get some use from the following year. Any recommendations please?

This type of thing was a hit for mine last year https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-wooden-ramps-racer/p4545037?s_ppc=2dx_mixed_fashion_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gad_source=1&gclsrc=ds

I was thinking maybe a push along fire engine?
Thank you, I'll take a look at the links!

Not sure if/when they'll have them but last year Aldi had some brilliant wooden toys. We got a big selection for DD. They had various wooden trucks, pull along toys, ramp racer among other things.
Really well priced and good quality, still being used by DD (who is just over 2) and now by DS who is 10 months

This!

Start saving interesting materials that you can cut pieces off and attach to the different sections with command poster strips to mix things up - sandpaper/bubble wrap/the crinkly top layer thing from a box of chocolates/fur fabric/corrugated cardboard/velvet/shiny foil/glittery card etc. Obviously it wouldn't be a safe toy to leave him with while you pop to the loo or whatever, but it's a good one to have on the highchair tray keeping him busy while you're cooking, that sort of thing. You can keep changing the materials to keep it engaging. Suitable for the next 6 - 9 months at least.

Montessori Infant Wooden Spinning Drum

When a child is about 7 to 11 months old, they are fascinated by cause and effect. And they will probably enjoy some more intense games. This all comes together in ‘Spinning Drum’. Made by Nienhuis, the leading Montessori materials maker based in Nethe...

Melissa and doug do a really nice one and studio have a wooden firestation for £15 with little push along engines/cars, you could always keep the smaller pieces until he's older. I hope you find what you're looking for and I'm sure he'll love whatever you pick!

Does he have a walker yet? If not something like this https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-wooden-blocks-baby-walker-fsc-certified-wood/p110988294

I’d go anything with wheels. From probably 10/11 months my son started to actually ‘play’ with toys that he could push back and forward. He loves his wooden train set still at nearly 3 and loves his wooden tractors and trailers. The ones with a trailer seem to be his favorite as he likes hooking them on

My son loved this Brio walking trolley. Used to put things in it and push it around!

Aldi/Lidl do wooden toys, so you may be able to find their version a bit cheaper. Would highly recommend Brio for high quality, indestructible. He has the wooden ride on dachshund too!

Pick a theme. We went with farm and since then we have had 6 or 7 small wooden toys that all have wooden pigs and what not. Push on truck, shape sorter, threading toy
She's 3 now and we can incorporate it into her wooden train set. Each toy has a different skill to learn so they work individually as well a whole.

The alphabet jigsaw are good we have the creepy crawlies one and she can play with each of the insects separately they can join the farm but the snail is bigger than the horses which is a bit creepy. We have a rocket too which she has played with every week since she could crawl and is now 3. Its multi coloured with shapes holding the layers together. She used to love crawling to it and knocking over now she loves building it naming the colours and the shapes it quite pricey we bought it with mat leave vouchers from work. I would look at toys that they can grow with. This is one of the toys I'm most thrilled with just morphs with her.

Thank you everyone! Some lovely suggestions and I'm feeling excited.
Love the ideas of picking a theme!

Another vote for the Galt pop up people. Ours played with it for years as the people got incorporated into imaginative play a bit later on.

When I helped to run the local toy library we had five or six and they were always out on loan.

If you want wood for eco reasons, you might also consider something from green toys - they're recycled plastic and absolutely bombproof, last for ages. Don't feel too plasticky.

We've got a boat and submarine that haven't gone manky despite being played with in the bath for at least three years. They do diggers, planes etc as well.

Agree that Aldi have some fab wooden toys in at the moment. I also bought my DS (10 months) a tug boy from Waterstones which is made from 100% recycled milk jugs! And it feels like fab quality that’s going to last a long time.
