How old were your children when they could write their name?

My child is 3 years old and everybody is surprised they can write their name at such young age, I thought it was common at this age?

My 3 year old can’t write her name. She can write A (first letter) but that’s it.

Overthebow · 16/11/2023 22:02

It is if they go to nursery. My dd just turned 3 and is learning to write her name now. She’s almost there so will be able to long before she’s 4. Most of her pre school class are at the same stage.

mynameiscalypso · 16/11/2023 22:03

I think that's quite early. My DS is in Reception and there are still a number of children who can't write their names.

Depends on whether she has just turned 3, or is 3 and 11 months.

Most children learn in nursery, the term before they go to school. So if your daughter has just turned 3, yep that is young (not astoundingly so, but on the younger side of normal). Almost 4, no not particularly unusual.

edit: I mean most children who go to nursery learn six months before they start school - obviously children who don’t go to nursery don’t learn to write there

IncompleteSenten · 16/11/2023 22:05

Three seems on the young side to me but mine have SN and we're probably 6 or 7 ISH.
I can't remember. Bloody hell. Worst mum ever!
Mind you they are in their 20s now. I should have written it all down, damnit. Ive forgotten so much of that shit!!

In summary - I'm not sure. They were very delayed so it was later than most. 3 is probably young but I know nothing about NT kids. Advice to all parents of young children - write this stuff down if you don't want to be making guesses in 20 years 😂

SnapdragonToadflax · 16/11/2023 22:05

Yup, 3-ish. Not sure if early 3 or later 3. He went to nursery though so they get them writing it a lot to identify their pictures.

NuffSaidSam · 16/11/2023 22:06

It's what they work on during the nursery year (3-4 years old), so most children will be able to write their name when they're 3. Obviously all children develop at different rates and some names are longer than others so it will vary. Much easier for Max to write his name than Zachary.

ABCXYZ17 · 16/11/2023 22:07

It was before she started reception but I can’t remember exactly when.

Being Mumsnet, someone will come along in a minute and tell your their 1 year old could write it in cursive!

DD has a long name and managed to write it around 4, though some letters are backwards 😂

GrazingSheep · 16/11/2023 22:08

Ds signed his name on a birthday card 2 months before his 3rd birthday. It was legible! A year later he was reading Harry Potter.

andmeee · 16/11/2023 22:10

@ABCXYZ17 you weren't wrong Grin

😂😂

wokbun · 16/11/2023 22:13

I don't mean this to be funny but it depends on the name and the language they are writing in

Mumofteenandtween · 16/11/2023 22:14

Dd could at 3. She used to draw endless pictures and write “Mummy, Daddy, Sarah, James” by each person.

Ds was over 4 before he had decided which hand to hold a pencil in (naturally ambidextrous) let alone do anything with the pencil once he was holding it!

At 13 and 10 I am not sure which if the two of them is more academically able.

Hibiscrubbed · 16/11/2023 22:15

At two.

Aww @User79785435 I had forgotten about the backwards writing they all do...
I think mine were 3, both attended preschool from ages 2 as we are classed as deprived area

fartfacenotfatface · 16/11/2023 22:16

Between 3-4

SoftSheen · 16/11/2023 22:16

DD could at a little over 3 (before she started pre-school). DS was a bit later, though still before he turned 4.

ThatMrsM · 16/11/2023 22:18

My 3 year old can now (he turned 3 in the summer), but his name is only 4 letters.

DD could write in cursive at one. However, she has a four letter name and three letters are the same so it doesn't count.

Just kidding. I have no idea how old she was. About 3/4 and it was a right scrawl.

purpleme12 · 16/11/2023 22:19

4 and a half. I remember exactly

Chasingsquirrels · 16/11/2023 22:20

Ds1 - 4.
Ds2 - no idea, he's 17 now and he can 🤣

Peacheroo · 16/11/2023 22:21

I actually remember being really proud she could write it and my friend who had a child the same age saying "well, yeah but after the first letter she's pretty much there" 😂

JJJSchmidt · 16/11/2023 22:21

Both dds could write their names (5/6 Letters) at 3 and a half. Both nurseries seemed pretty surprised so I don't think that it was something that they were actively taught. I worked on letters with dd1 but no time for my poor second child, so i think there might be an age where it just 'clicks'
