Does my toddler need a snowsuit?

LO is 15 months and is so close to walking, but is currently still crawling. He wants to be outside ALL of the time, no matter how cold/wet it is.
Will we get much use out of an all in one snowsuit in the UK, or will it never be cold enough?
Is there a better alternative?

Yes, a waterproof snow suit is a good idea.

A puddle suit would probably be best I doubt he could crawl in snowsuit. DS is almost 4 and still wears a puddle suit on occasion for forest school at nursery or muddy trips to the park so definitely plenty of time yet for it getting used.

Yes. I used one when DD1 went to the childminder on the back of my bike.

A waterproof outer layer might be better (along the lines of muddy puddles), which means you can layer up or down depending on the temperature

Thanks everyone! I do have a thin puddle suit so I’ll stick with that and use layers :)

Have a look for a fleeced lined one, there's normally tons on FB market place at this time of the year.

I much prefer waterproof trousers, you can even get salopette style ones if you prefer and a coat to a snowsuit. It’s cheaper as the waterproof trousers are usually very reasonable and you’re buying the coat anyway. It’s more versatile because you can layer up/down as needed- snowsuits are designed for cold weather and you risk overheating on those standard British mild but wet days. It’s also easier to keep clean as the waterproof trousers are wipe clean so saves washing and drying a heavy snowsuit each time it gets mucky which will be frequently with a crawler. My toddler owns a snowsuit but we only use it when skiing, never at home.

Snowsuit/fleece lined puddle suit.

Just make sure it really is waterproof - lots of the cheapy ones are just water resistant and they get a soggy bum from going down wet slides.

We had more wear from a puddle suit than a snow suit at that age.

Age 2+ when they don’t crawl a pair of waterproof trousers were very useful but it also depends how often you have to walk places.

DS2 has used his snow suit once already this winter when we had to walk somewhere in heavy rain.

I had a 1-2 yo through lock down when if I wanted to get out the house with her it had to be outside or not at all. Always appreciated the snowsuit as soon as she started toddling! It doesn't have to be extremely cold but after half an hour outside the little ones do struggle to stay warm. More so when they're not running around like mad things. Now she's 3 ill get less use out of it for that reason but I'll still use it if it gets cold enough.. Makes winter family days out a lot more possible/enjoyable if kids aren't cold.

Beachwaves127 · 16/11/2023 18:16

We’ve got one for our 12 m Dc and used it loads already. I love knowing she’s warm

Beachwaves127 · 16/11/2023 18:17

Also if of help jojo mama have 25% off at the moment which makes a different on their winter items.

modgepodge · 16/11/2023 18:19

We used one loads at that age BUT it was Covid times so we went out in bad weather. Now if the weather was that bad we’d do something else instead!! Have had puddle suits every year since which has been fine, and this year went for sallopettes and coat as it’s easier for her now she’s at school for forest school day.

It depends where in the UK you live.

If you're in the north then it might well be worth it. In the south? Probably not so much - just stick to the waterproof with a warm layer under.

Caspianberg · 16/11/2023 18:23

Not a snow suit. Better off getting fleece line rain trousers or ski salopette dungarees. That way you have options of top half being just jumper or fleece if warmer or add coat over if really cold.
