does anyone use baby powder anymore?
have a 3 week old and just used baby powder after a bath as couldn’t get to her neck and armpits to dry them throughly. Sis in law then mentioned not to use as it’s super dangerous to babies ? I must be living under a rock as never heard of this and remember my mum used fo absolutely smother me in it !!

It's not recommended now. Babies can inhale the fine powder and it can cause them to have respiratory problems. Also, it clogs up their pores.

I used it on mine, but that was 40 years ago

I believe talc is considered a possible carcinogen now? Although I’m sure one use will not harm your wee one.

That it was found to contain asbestos and cause cancer put people off. Now it isn’t talcum powder, just corn starch or whatever, so that risk has gone. But people probably realised in the meantime that you don’t really need it.

Legoblockskillfeet · 15/11/2023 21:11

I used to get liquid talc when my kids were babies. I think thats safe. Asda sell it.

CatOnTheCludgy · 15/11/2023 21:13

You can get safe stuff, which is corn starch I think. But real talc is not safe to use. It's microscopically small and the way it isined, it's pretty much always there with asbestos. And is thought to/ does cause internal cancers.
So it's a no really!
But have a look at the eco brands for safe talc if you really need to use it on baby's neck

Did the gravy not taste of Johnson? Baby powder is quite highly scented.

Lol a lot of these powders nowadays are maid from maize flour (ie corn) so probably not miles away from cornstarch - which also what I use to thicken gravy Smile

But actually I'm interested in baby powders too and was looking at some just this week - hence how I discovered the whole maize thing.

I'm looking for something to help absorb moisture on my DD's skin because she seems to get sweaty in certain places (eg behind the knees) and then breaks out in painful spots there. I thought a powder might help but then hesitated.

Any suggestions welcome. And don't say cornstarch Grin

ClemFandangooo · 15/11/2023 21:27

I use liquid talc from Asda or the Johnson's natural powder which doesn't have talc in

We use baby powder for our wee one and we get ours from Babipur. The brand is Little Violet, and we get the unscented one. No talc and no nasties.
