Worried I'm too nosy with my 16 year olds social life

I have a 16 year old ds and we live quite rurally. He's at college at present and has a circle of friends in a neighbouring village from school. I was hoping earlier in the year he'd found a proper girlfriend (he's had a few casuals) but it ended in nothing. I thought he might've found a new one and he wanted me to take him to her village a few miles away today and even gave me the petrol money as I'm a little short until payday. When he got up this morning he said she's now made other plans, which I find a bit dubious. He was obviously quite sad and grumpy this morning. I'm hoping it is a genuine reason and it'll be rearranged but it's upsetting to see him feeling dejected. Am I worrying unreasonably? I see his other friends who have girlfriends and would like the same for him although I know he's only 16, so plenty of time for that. I just don't want this affecting his confidence and feeling this will keep happening. He's a typical teen who won't talk very much. Any thoughts or has any other parents felt the same about their dcs and should I stop worrying and keep out of his personal life?
