Is a yoto a ridiculous present for a 1 year old?

I've got a nearly 5 year old and a 1 year old.
Eldest has lots of gifts lined up for Christmas/birthday (they're within a month of each other).

But I'm struggling with youngest. We already have lots of toys from when eldest was young. Plus he's only just turned 1 so has recently had lots of toys.

But I don't want eldest to see youngest having considerably less gifts.

I'm thinking of a yoto... Because...

We want a new nightlight anyway
He absolutely loves music
We'd like to play him some soothing music at night and the sound machine we have is a bit loud and doesn't have much choice. They're all tinkly and jarring when you're trying to sleep.

So it's for us to use with him rather than for him to actually play with.
I'm not sure if that just sounds bizarre though?!

I bought my 1yr old a Toni box for Xmas last year. It's amazing and so intuitive, he could figure out how to use it himself. I think the yoto player is good too but might be better for older children as they use cards instead of figures. Yoto is also a bit cheaper.

My child really likes the Toni characters and just plays with them sometimes, which he wouldn't be able to do with the cards.

Not weird at all, I got DS one at 2 and it's been used constantly for nearly 2 years now. It's a fab gift but be prepared for your five year old to want one too. Grin

have had ours since 2yo, and it is a great toy to grow along with - so much varied content, including white noise, music, stories, meditation, sound effects, etc. that would suit a very young child. I think better than the Tonibox in this regard, in addition to cards being much cheaper. You may need to help them with putting in cards initially, but mine picked it up at 2 no problem and they would have been able to slot the cards earlier.

At 5, they don't have much of an idea about what things cost and would 'measure' fairness by having a number of things to unwrap, so, rather than going out and looking for things to spend money on, I'd put the money into savings or Premium Bonds for dc2 and just wrap up some old toys from dc1, or little bits and bobs they need anyway - from a swimming costume or a hair brush, to a box of their favourite snack.

We’ve ordered a tonie box for our 1yo. He keeps trying to nick his sisters and shows lots of interest in it (she’s not ready to hand hers down for a while yet)
That way they can both have it at bedtime and share the stories / music between them.

There's no point for a one year year old and he will post the cards everywhere. Get him a toniebox and revisit when he's closer to 5.

word of caution on the yoto.

We got one for our DDs 3rd birthday. It's basically been an expensive night light since. She's now 5 and still shows no interest in it. Prefers us to read to her or time with her tablet.

So if you can 'try before you buy'...play date with someone who has one/ borrow for an afternoon.

My 14 month DGS manages and really enjoys putting characters on his older brother’s Toniebox

We got one for our 1yr old last year. They love the stories, could manage to put the cards in. They’ve used it a lot, the vocabulary one is great. It will also last them a long time.
