Baby Coat Recommendations

Hi!

I’m in need of a coat and snowsuit for my 4 month old baby boy and was wondering if anyone could recommend any good brands?

I’ve tried Next, H&M and Primark but whenever we’ve tried on a coat for him they are either too long in the arms or tight around the hips and waist. He is quite a chunky baby so we would need something decent with a bit of stretch and something that can keep him warm.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance!

I didn’t really bother at that age just used blankets in the pram but marks and Spencer’s coats are the best for littles one. Lightweight and easy to get in and off.

Thanks, I love M&S.

What age would you recommend for getting him a coat?

I guess it depends on what you are doing. At that age my DD would stay in her pram outdoors so I only used a fleece star wrap before it got too cold then a warm footmuff which covered up to her shoulders and was warm enough she only needed indoors clothes under it (so easy to pull off when inside if she was sleeping unlike a pramsuit or coat). We had a Mountain Warehouse coat when she was around 9 months, just for use in the sling which wasn’t too heavy. A snowsuit might be needed if they are going to taken out of the pram outdoors but they are quite awkward to take on and off if you are going between indoors and outdoors so it can be better to use something you can remove without waking them like blankets.

H&m tends to fit long and narrow - not surprised you struggled there!
My experience is that m&s is bizarrely oversized when they're wee babies, but suddenly becomes undersized when they fit 18months. So might be a good shout for now.

I personally think they're more snug in a pram suit if they're still in the pram bassinet, but it's easier with coat and footmuff when they're sitting up.

When you do buy a coat, I can't recommend enough something with slippery sleeve linings. Trying to thread a clothed floppy baby arm through a beautiful but impractical furry lined sleeve was my nemesis....

Mine we’re about 9 months when they had a coat and proper snow suit.
You can get soft pram suits and people rave about the star wraps.

Decathlon have proper coats and stuff for babies. I'd take a look there, the fashion shops stuff is all just for the looks not the quality

DS is 3 months and has a lovely fluffy jacket from F and F at Tesco

It might help if you said what you needed it for as a baby that age is either led flat in their pushchair, where you can do a snowsuit if you want but jumpers/blankets/hats are fine,

Or if they're in a baby carrier, they shouldn't need a coat as you count as an extra layer for them,

Or in a carseat where they mustn't have any extra layers on anyone for safety.

I just want to make sure he’s kept warm during times when we are outdoors, mainly walking through outdoor shopping centres and occasional short walks through a park.

In a few months he’ll be out of the carrycot part of the pushchair as he has outgrown it and into the other attachment we have for the pushchair so I wanted to prepare ahead for then.

Also as a first time mom I wasn’t sure whether a coat snowsuit/pramsuit was needed so any general advice is always appreciated! 🙃

I agree with pp that a star wrap might be best. They're not close fitting but lovely and cosy too wear in the pram. I use mine still at 7 months

gotomomo · 14/11/2023 08:37

Mine had H&M and gap respectively... they weren't chunky though. Definitely needed them as we skied/snow sports (lived 45 mins from slopes) and they were out snowshoeing with me by 4 weeks.

TheCraicDealer · 14/11/2023 08:48

DS is 6mos and on colder days he has a thicker top on (ie a sweater or a cardigan), fleece star wrap and hat. I did get him a snow suit but really I only use it if I know we’re going to be outside for an extended period, like when we went to the market this weekend. I got a Boden one off Vinted for a fiver and I’m glad I didn’t spend any more than that given how little use it gets!

You shouldn’t use coats or snowsuits in the car seat so really they’re only useful if he’s in the pram. Now DS is in the seat rather than bassinet and has the footmuff, the star wrap plus a thicker top is more than enough to keep him toasty in most circumstances.

MichelleeG · 09/12/2023 11:39

Update: I’ve ended buying a star wrap and will use it for the first time today.

Can anyone advise whether I will need to use a blanket over the star wrap both in the car and pushchair? Or just the star wrap on its own. We’ll be outdoors walking through an outdoor town centre.

Also it okay to pop the star wraps hood on in the car or not?

OP posts:
TheCraicDealer · 11/12/2023 01:32

If he’s in the star I don’t add a blanket over the top unless we’re outside. The car heats up pretty quickly and the car seat is so snug with padding around them, I wouldn’t want him to overheat.

I also don’t put the hood on him in the car, I just sort of keep it flat and tuck it behind his head and then if it’s cold when we get out I’ll pop it on. Too much risk of the hood slipping down over his eyes/face when I can’t see to correct it, and again the car heats up quickly anyway.

YellowHatt · 11/12/2023 01:44

The star wraps get really warm. If you have the heating on in the car I wouldn’t put it on for the car at all. Tuck it over his lap like a blanket instead.

I don’t add a blanket outside. Hat and star wrap then into bassinet of pram. But I would if it’s extra cold.
