Reliably dry 4.3 yr old starts wetting herself.

What interventions do you use?

(p.s - not an infection, already checked with GP)

I would probably look for/think about anything that might be bothering her - changes at home, problems at school? Toileting is usually the fist thing to go if something is bothering DS (3.5yrs).

I probably wouldn't do anything beyond trying to solve/ease any other issues....and remain calm if it does happen, encourage her to help clear up any mess, change her clothes etc & gently remind her that wees go in the loo & look for signs that she might need to go & is too busy to realise or is avoiding the issue.

Thankyou Terramum

I'm positive nothing's wrong... no changes anywhere, appears normal and happy at nursery (have asked), behaviour unchanged in other areas. Wondered initially if she was becoming unwell but it's been going on for too long for that to be a reason (and appears in good health)

She doesn't have full-on accidents, leaves it too late. I'm wondering if it's becoming a battle of wills, tbh.

Reminding doesn't work, for that reason

It could just be that she is too involved in what she is doing to want to stop & go to the loo. DS does that quite a lot. He tends to do a bit of a "wee dance" trying to hold it in, then dribbles a bit, which takes the pressure off & he resumes his activity until the urge returns a little later. Gently reminding him that he would be better able to build a tower or draw a picture if he wasn't jumping up & down sometimes works. Offering to accompany him & help lift the seat/pull down his trousers seems to help as well - I think he quite likes the company .

Does this happen at nursery, home or both?

I have this with my dd, 3 3/4, too.

I have today started back using a sticker chart for her (she has constipation problems which could also be related which is why I am doing something 'special') which seems to be working. It just giver her that little reminder she needs to go to the toilet!

notnowbernard · 11/03/2008 19:17

Terramum - yes, she's definitely too involved to stop and go sometimes. That's fine, I know in time that will right itself.

But my flashpoint is like you say the 'wee dance' followed by gentle reminder followed by refusal to go followed by wet 5mins later. And then NOT GIVING A SHIT!! Aaaargh!

She is too independent to want me in with her... and she already changes herself, without asking, if wet.

SouthernBelle, glad your chart is having an impact. Ours is shite!!!

I know I am probably giving it too much attention and need to Ignore Ignore Ignore...

It's reassuring to know this is a fairly common occurence though
