Overnight nappy reccomendations (for bedwetter)

Title says it all really I am looking for nappy recommendations for son overnight who isn’t dry yet! We have tried restricting fluids before bed etc but still manages to leak out of his pull ups which has resulted in endless washing and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to dry it all now the weather is cold.

Lots of waterproof undersheets like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/brolly-sheets/s?k=brolly+sheets but also we had a mattress protector from an incontinence website, similar thing to what they have on hotel beds etc.

Fab thank you! Will check those out. I thought it was a chemical that was released just couldn’t remember the name

My son is autistic in nappies age 5 we just use normal pull ups and he has never leaked... Have you tried different brands?

Cheryl1978 · 10/11/2023 19:05

Like others have said, 4 isn’t a big deal to still have overnight nappies. GP will help if he still wets at an older age but the older they get the more they tend to manage it themselves. Thankfully!

@GemGem240 the medication is desmopressin but I didn't want to medicate him for longer than necessary. I also wet the bed until I was medicated at 4 with some sort of anti-depressant or something which has the side effect of dry at night. Got to love the 70s.

lifechanginglemoncake · 10/11/2023 19:06

We have had the same issue. We found Tesco size 7 pull ups reduced leaks to only once or twice a week compared to 4/5 times in branded. We also got a pee pad for the bed which has significantly reduced washing. We got two and we tumble them.

I will have a look at the Tesco ones, are they Fred and Flo? I don’t think we have tried them

Yes the Fred and Flo ones. Our 4 year old is quite slim and I think these fit more snugly.

Do you find the pull ups or nappies better? I have just seen they do a 7 in both

Does he wet a lot overnight? I mean is his nappy or pull up full?

They aren’t full often when he leaks, some mornings they are so full

My daughter wet a lot and that’s why we went with nappies to an older age until they weren’t so full.

Went to drynites when her nappy wasn’t as wet in the morning

febbabies2023 · 10/11/2023 19:21

Gosh, just for info, night dryness is hormonal, you can't teach it and it's extremely common for them to not be dry until age 7!

We use Tesco for my 3.5 year old the pull up ones and they've always been good!

Could also try doubling up on the nappy or even sizing up as they might need a bigger size!

Edited

I will pick up some Tesco and Pampers and see how we get on

He won't be dry until he produces the hormone vasopressin which reduces urine production whilst we sleep, so the bladder doesn't get full and doesn't need emptying. Until he makes this hormone he will not be dry at night consistently.

You need to look at the ERIC website for reassurance that this is completely normal but also incontinence websites as they cater to this sort of thing. There are children and adults who need to wear nappies at night and those products are out there.

I would definitely go back to a nappy if pull ups are leaking.

There are lots of different things that can help but accepting this is completely normal is the first step. We went through lifting, alarms, medication but only for overnight stays in hotels/school residentials but still had the back up nappy/pull up. The GP wasn't concerned even when Ds was 8.

Thank you, a sensible answer!
There's no need to visit a Gp yet so please don't worry OP

Thank you! I won’t worry for now, just try to make him comfortable and leak free for now and hopefully he grows out of it.

Good luck. There’s nothing to worry about just now. I’m not even that worried about my daughter at 13! Just something that happens and I’m sure she’s not alone. There’s drynites for a reason 😅

febbabies2023 · 10/11/2023 19:25

@GemGem240 I'm sure he will! I know all you hear is a parent is 'my child was dry at night at 7.5m (exaggeration obvs) and it can feel like you're doing something wrong but you're absolutely not and them being comfortable and happy is the main thing! So please try not to worry about this it's so minor :) x

That’s true! I have just been on the Tesco website and they do them for 8-15 hopefully we won’t need them at that age but it’s good to know products are out there!

Absolutely. Like others have said I know there’s pressure when you hear “my child was dry at x age”, but it’s just about doing what’s best for them. I definitely didn’t foresee nappies for my daughter at 8/9/10 but they helped her so why not.

And yeah even now she’s 13 she has something to help her still

MillsX19x · 10/11/2023 19:35

Another vote for regular nappies! I find them so much better overnight as you can fasten them to get them fit more snug than Drynites etc

Did you have leaks with drynites?

Unfortunately yes! They were very expensive too

LateNightReads · 10/11/2023 20:09

We went through so many brands of pull ups and the only ones we found that could hold the full nights worth of wee without leaking were rascal and friends from Tesco. They only stock them in the bigger Tesco extras. Barely had any accidents with them.

yaboreme · 10/11/2023 20:48

@GemGem240 I found that pampers were worth paying for any the go up to size 8. Pull ups just didn't fit right, maybe because he was more slender.

Tried every brand of pull ups. No good.

I think as long as they are day trained it's not a concern at the moment (you would be surprised at how many other mums I've spoken too who have said their 4yo is still in nappies at bedtime).

As other posters have said, see how it goes and hopefully in time it will get better.
