Foods my weaning baby threw on he floor today

Well, yesterday really 😀

Breakfast - softened but not soggy, graspable Weetabix biscuit, raspberries

Lunch - tomato broccoli and spinach pinwheel, green beans, carrot, batons and baby corn (veg microwave steamed)

Dinner - fusilli pasta and bolognase, melon

And breakfast this morning: avocado toast

6m old, 2 weeks in to BLW. Evidently some food is going in but mostly is gummed, squished, flapped and then going on the floor. I'd forgotten how frustrating and tiresome this stage of weaning is!

He/she is creating floor art! You have a very creative and talented baby 😉

But yes, I know what you mean. I used to spread out a plastic sheet (made of stiff polka dot wipeable fabric from John Lewis) under the highchair, and sometimes just fold it over after meals rather than cleaning it properly. There was no point when it would get filthy again in four hours.

BarnacleBeasley · 10/11/2023 09:56

What you need is a dog.

BabaganooToo · 10/11/2023 09:58

My dog gained over a kilogram when my baby first started weaning... Also weetabix is the worst. It's like cement when it dries.

This morning 15 month old DS smooshed banana into my hair. It's a step up from throwing it I suppose...

This is why I didn't do BLW. I'm autistic and could not have stood the mess. By the time my son graduated from lumpy jar meals around 10/11 months he was past the 'let's throw stuff' stage and was more interested in it going in his mouth.

Omg this, my dog lies under the high chair and just waits now! He's a very efficient floor cleaner though! It's exactly what you need op!

Yes I learnt this the first time around when I made the whole biscuit sodden and mushy, and left it on the bibado and highchair until baby went for their first nap before I cleared it up ....

I did think it might be a little bit less messy of I left ye biscuit more whole and just a little milk-damp, it definitely helped and avoided the cementabix!

My baby gets angry if I don't let them feed themself, my eldest was the same, won't let me come near them with a spoon!

My eldest has started copying baby now a bit too 🙈 erm, no thank you 3yo you're supposed to be setting the good example!!

@Toddler101 I haven't tried it "less wet" so I might give that a go. It's the one food I've refused to let him eat by himself lol. It's spoon-fed or nothing for weetabix!

Toddler101 · 10/11/2023 10:07

@Squiblet floor art, I like it! 🤣 I'm less keen on the meal time wall art 🙈

Ds is 11 months and we do a mix of black and spoon feeding but we also use a bibadoo which had been great up until last week, when ds worked out that he can use it like a catapult to fire food across the room. I'm trying to be impressed with his ingenuity.

Toddler101 · 10/11/2023 14:19

@Lavender14That would both infuriate and impress me 😂 Clever bubba!

I'm impressed by the range you at offering! mine got waaaaaaay less variety than that until a bit more was going in their mouths! It's a long and messy phase..... my twins are 3 and still drop things! Wipe clean floors are the way to go, we had carpet when my eldest was weaning and the table was near a window with lovely curtains.... SUCH a mistake! Raspberries take forever to wash out....

Toddler101 · 11/11/2023 00:24

@TinyTeacher oh god I'd definitely get a mat or find somewhere else to eat if we had carpet down under the table!!
It was late spring and into summer when I started weaning my eldest - we ate outside a lot so I didn't care so much that tagliatelle got flung at the wall outside 😂

The variety is to encourage my eldest to eat more than just cheese sandwiches 😂 "look, baby is trying something new! Well done baby!"

Why are you offering 3 (what sounds like properly prepared!) meals at only 6 months? Seems like a massive waste of time. My 7 mo has two meals a day, they are easy salt/sugar free options like a banana BLW followed by an Ella puree. I learnt from my first that there is no real point following meal times until they older and actually swallowing more. First few weeks were just tastes and allergies.

stargirl1701 · 11/11/2023 19:36

I used to borrow the neighbour's dog... 😂

ExcitingRicotta · 11/11/2023 19:38

Straight into 3 meals at 6 months is a lot! Save yourself the cleaning and build up gradually..?

I'll start the same as you then: Why are you offering a banana and a puree then calling it a meal? 😂

I'll answer it for you, too: Your approach to weaning is different to mine and that's fine.

I also think you either missed where I said we do BLW, or misunderstand BLW. No waste of time whatsoever, baby is offered what we eat if they're awake when we eat. A spoonful of bolognase and a handful of pasta from the family pot. On their highchair tray to explore with their hands and their own spoon. Cooking just for baby? That would be a waste of time!

Well scoop it up and give it again.

The neighbour's cat did the same job when I weaned my first! Mostly it was summer alfresco dining and their cat was a regular visitor to our garden anyway. A right old Six Dinner Sid 😂

We have underfloor heating. It's wonderful. I'd just leave rice for an hour or two, and once it was dried out, hoover it up.

Edited

Or ...I could just let baby crack on and explore.

I also have a older toddler so there's already a clean up. What's another rinse of the cloth or wipe of of the floor?

Baby is taking to it very well at their own pace.
