I arrived at an unstaffed station and saw that a teenager, probably a school leaver as it was during school hours, was sitting with her feet up on the nearest bench. I approached her and asked her politely to take her feet off the seat as I would like to sit on it. She refused. I said you know you can get fined for this – there are notices on the railways that say do not put your feet on seats. She removed her feet. I pointed out there was now dirt on the seat and could she remove that before I sat down. She refused and said I could sit on another seat – true there was another platform bench further down. I made my way reluctantly to that vacant bench and heard her talking on the phone about someone “infringing her personal space”. I am 77 and have brought up 3 daughters. Even if they are allowed to put their feet on sofas at home, are teenagers ever told nowadays by their mothers to respect public spaces and not put dirty shoes on public seats?
