What to do with 3 month old abroad if she can’t wear sun tan lotion?

I have bought a shade for the pram and I’m sure she will be asleep a lot of the time but I’m just starting to worry that although I’ll keep her out of the direct sun she will still get some sun. Just been reading you can actually still get a lot of UV rays when in the shade too!

The sun tan lotions all seem to say 6 months plus. What does everyone do with a young baby on holiday?

Child's farm do a baby sun cream with a high factor, I always used that. Lots of shade and cool clothing too

There are suncreams that are suitable for babies, like https://www.boots.com/childs-farm-spf50-baby-suncream-100ml-10323102?
other than that, I have always just kept baby in the shade as much as possible / wearing a hat etc. ? Always been fine and never burnt.
The shade / UV covers for prams (black out for naps) are amazing too.

There are the all in one 50+ UV swimsuits too, although I have only used these for older babies/toddlers. Not sure how small that start but that might be an option if you’re still a bit worried?
Remember- people do raise babies in hot countries though! So if you’re able to get some local advice it will probably help put your mind at rest :-)

Stay inside when sun at strongest around midday and the shade the rest of the time. Always been fine - i've never used suncream on babies/toddlers.

Keep in the shade and cover up with light long sleeve and long legged clothing if there is a chance of sun exposure. Snoozeshade is good as long as it’s not super hot.

We went to Mexico when my sun was 3 months old and dressed him in very light long sleeve and long legs clothing, sun hat and never let him stay in the sun longer than a few minutes at a time. We had a sun shade and a fan for the buggy and a portable sun tent for the beach. We brought window shades for the rental car too. Didn't use any sun cream.

Georgiexx · 07/11/2023 22:27

Thanks everyone! Didn’t know they did that sun cream so will take a look now. I do have the pop up tent from my first baby but we didn’t go on holiday as early. I will take it with us again though

I wouldn’t use sun cream on a baby that young. I’d keep them in the shade, use long sleeved light clothing, a UV tent. Keep an eye on their temperature; feed them often. It’s not as bad as it seems and sun cream won’t help too much at that age anyway, as they really shouldn’t be exposed to the sun, and it’s scientifically iffy.

We took baby DS to a few really hot places for work before he was six months and the locals just keep the babies out of the sun. None of them used sun cream, and it was easier than it sounds to us!

Moogoo which can be bought from Holland and Barrett can be used under 6 months. Very thick but it does rub in eventually!

iamstruggling1 · 07/11/2023 23:08

I used Asda own brand factor 50 for babies and children on my baby who was 4 months when we went to Portugal.

I also kept her in the shade, she wore UV protection hats and when in the pool she wore the all in one UV protection suits.

You still need sun cream in the shade.

You should read about the types of sunlight. The rays from the sun are different at sunrise to the ones later towards noon onwards.
The sun rays naturally protect you from the UV if you go out in the early morning sun. This is a legit thing, I don't know all the ins and outs, I learned about it from someone who has vitaligo and has been told this by a doctor, he has to do it daily so his white patches of skin have natural protection. Sun screen has lots of bad stuff in and has been said to cause cancer.
Might be worth looking into if your daughter is going have to deal with this for life xx hope this helps xx

Lots of great UV protection clothing on amazon. Brands we used when baby was very small were: i play and coolibar. Still use them on toddler now as they react to suncream and the clothing has worked great at preventing burns.

MaggieFS · 08/11/2023 07:40

What kinds of shade have you bought for the pram? Just a parasol or a UV cover?

wildwestpioneer · 08/11/2023 08:37

You can buy uv protective clothing, hats etc.

junbean · 08/11/2023 08:37

Mineral sunscreen.
