To refuse antiobitoics for my DS?

Will try to make this has short as possible.

some may have seen the thread I had about my son with awful blisters all over his body on holiday , the Spanish hospital said it was hand foot mouth that got infected and spread like wildlife. UK hospital said we will never know if an infection started it or if it’s just infected eczema.

anyway yesterday, a few weeks after the hospital stay I noticed a couple of my sons nails started to come away at the cuticle? And thought oh I wonder if it was hfm after all and the Spanish hospital were right! Thought I would of course send a picture to my dr, the only good picture I could get was on a sore finger. This finger has been on and off since about 4 month, he has it constantly in his mouth and it’s constantly rough and red but then in the night seems to get better. The dermatologist says to just put cream on when I can overnight.

so anyway the dr reception rings saying the dr wants him to take 10 days of antibiotics for the infected finger, I explain the photo was about the fingernail not the finger ? She says (news to me) that the dr doesn’t read the message I send just the photo! I explain he’s only just been on antibiotics, super strong strength and took at least a week for him to trust food again after being worried about everything near his mouth.

also I have no info from the dr about the nails 🙄 so haven’t really got anywhere. I really don’t think the finger is infected as many times it’s been like that. I will attach a photo that I sent to the dr from yesterday and a photo of it now ( looks a lot better)

also seems two nails in total seem to be doing this so I’m not sure if I need to see the dr and it was hfm or if it’s something else and I need to worry ?

It looks fungal hence affecting the nail.

Charlotteap · 06/11/2023 18:03

Thanks for the reply @cocksstrideintheevening even though the other nail on the other hand is the same? Without any red finger.

he’s had the finger on and off for months and the dermo said it’s eczema made worse by the constant sucking.

just the two nails that’s new that’s why I thought hfm made sense

I’d give him the antibiotics.

JenniferJupiterVenusandMars · 06/11/2023 18:31

Why bother to ask the doctor if you think you know better and won’t follow professional advice?
Poor kid. That must be so sore.

SwordToFlamethrower · 06/11/2023 18:32

Give him a course of probiotics alongside the antibiotics

rubyslippers · 06/11/2023 18:33

even If it is eczema and it’s infected he’ll need antibiotics
that finger looks sore, swollen and painful
i wouldn’t hesitate to give antibiotics

theduchessofspork · 06/11/2023 18:34

That looks infected OP and it can quickly turn into sepsis, so yes.

Support his gut health at the same time - probiotics etc

Mummymummy89 · 06/11/2023 18:35

You need to get him seen in person rather than send photos at this point.

But yes, just do what the doctor prescribes, honestly... sorry I know you must be very understandably distressed and worried but you come across as quite vague and confused and not in a good headspace to self-diagnose.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 06/11/2023 18:36

It doesn't matter if he's just been on antibiotics or if they're "super strength" or whatever. Different antibiotics target different infections (even so-called "broad spectrum" ones), and if one hasn't worked you need to try another. That is why the GP has prescribed them.
Also splitting hairs over finger/fingernail - wtf? Just read the bloody message from the GP and get your child the treatment that has been recommended and that they need!

Charlotteap · 06/11/2023 18:37

He has just finished a strong course of antibiotics and was on an IV drip at the hospital for 2 days and the consultant at the hospital said to put on the finger 0.25% steroid cream at night and if it gets worse 1% cream with his wrap.

I was showing the gp the finger nails not the finger which is what he failed to see , like this thread

Do you really think it's more likely that he and we "failed to see" it rather than that people are trying to tell you that the GP has seen an infection in the finger with a symptom of nail breakage that needs treating with antibiotics?
Really?

FloofCloud · 06/11/2023 18:40

Looks infected to me too - it may be the antibiotics he took didn't work on the bacterium in question.

I read your post, but I think the cuticle coming away on the nail looks infected. We aren’t medical professionals here OP so I’m not sure what you want from any of us if you don’t want us to say we’d give the antibiotics.

TeaKitten · 06/11/2023 18:42

Also the title of your thread is AIBU to refuse antibiotics and then your annoyed people have answered that question… it’s not logical.

Ohnoooooooo · 06/11/2023 18:45

Take him to a pharmacist if you want peace of mind it is infected (although a pharmacist will not tell you not to take antibiotics if the doctor has said to).
but I would be worried about septis developing if you don’t take them.
ask pharmacist about his nails
he needs some friendly bacteria. I am guessing he has a fungal infection in his nail and since he’s sucking his finger it’s gone internally?

Pinkpinkplonk · 06/11/2023 18:46

If the rash/ redness on the finger hasn’t changed since you were discharged, and you’re not concerned, then don’t worry about it, it’s an ongoing condition and a different issue. You need to make that clear to your GP. Try to make an apt, and go along with your discharge advice. Say the only thing that’s changed is the nail. Good luck

FarmGirl78 · 06/11/2023 18:55

What the actual chuff? I think the nail is the least of your worries!! It doesn't matter whether the GP read your note or did/didn't bother about the nail. He's been presented with a photo of a glaringly obvious infected finger!! Sod the nail.....THE FINGER NEEDS SORTING! It'll be swollen, painful and can lead to sepsis. Sepsis is serious stuff, it's not just like a bad infection.....its when your organs start shutting down because of your body is being poisoned by infection and can't cope any longer. It's serious. Give him the tablets!!

Charlotteap · 06/11/2023 18:55

@Pinkpinkplonk thank you, I appreciate that. Didn’t realise mumsnet could be so attacking! The finger is much better than when we was in hospital it was all yellow and scabby but luckily on the mend thank you.

the gp has finally rung back and admitted to only just reading the hospital discharge notes and didn’t even realise we’d been in two Spanish hospital and an nhs one for over 48 hours, he says to continue with the steroid cream as prescribed from the hospital and follow the consultants discharge plan and he will look at the nails on Wednesday, total of 3 coming off, I think even a toe nail maybe dropping off too

OP posts:
Charlotteap · 06/11/2023 18:57

@FarmGirl78 thank you for your concern , I am so aware of the dangers of sepsis as we have just recently been discharged from hospital for that exact worry

I feel my message was overly harsh, especially as I now know the Doctor hadn't actually spoke to you at all untill just now. Caught up in outrage purely because I was so scared for your Son. Apologies.

Charlotteap · 06/11/2023 19:08

@FarmGirl78 thank you for that but don’t worry I completely understand I would be the same. And after reading my post I really haven’t made it clear at all , we was on holiday and in a Spanish hospital rushed back home and been in hospital at home they were really worried about sepsis. His entire body was covered in infection and I know it seemed I didn’t seem bothered about the finger but it actually looks a lot better than a few days ago believe it or not.

I have attached a photo from when he was first discharged from hospital ( graphic photo)

I think you’ve been given a hard time on here, OP. I remember your previous post from when you were abroad and your little boy got very poorly. I’ve seen your update and I’m glad the doctor is going to see you on Wednesday. It does look sore and possibly infected though so if it worsens I’d definitely be phoning them back or 111 in the meantime. Hopefully the steroid cream will help it before then, if it’s not an infection.
