Where should baby sleep when guests come over?

Currently baby is 6.5 months and since transferring him to the spare room/bedroom he has been sleeping like a log, which has been a game changer for us as his parents.

The problem is we have family over quite often. Before baby, they’d stay in what is now the nursery. We’ve kept the single bed in there but I’m so scared to make any changes for our LO who has been sleeping so well?

we do have a small study. I guess i can put up a travel cot and have LO sleep there when guests come over? I wouldn’t want him in our room because from experience, we wake him up.

I could alternatively ask the guests to sleep in living room. We have a big sofa.

I know I may sound petty but honestly, our LO sleeping so well has made all the difference to our lives and wouldn’t want to disrupt this. Thoughts?

My DC always slept really badly in the travel cot, so I would try to leave him in his own cot / room if at all possible!

I really don’t understand MN’s obsession with giving up your own bed for guests. I wouldn’t expect it anywhere I’m visiting and it would actually make me feel really uncomfortable to sleep in someone else’s bed. No way in hell am I giving up my bed either.

I have never been offered in real life but if I was it would be a very quick no thank you! I don't like the idea at all, I couldn't sleep in someone else's safe space.

No, I’ve never experienced it either! It just seems to be a MN thing. I had other people sleep in my room when I was a child but that only happened at Christmas/big events rather than regularly.

We gave our son (nearly 3) the smallest bedroom and made the larger bedroom the study with a sofa bed. He doesn't need a big bedroom right now as he only uses it for sleeping.

Could you not do that too?

kitsuneghost · 06/11/2023 14:45

Travel cot in the study is fine for now
What is going to happen further down the line though when they need a big bed.
You seem to be talking in general rather than an upcoming visit
You would need to organise something more permanent if you have people staying over often.

Don't disturb the baby.

Guests need to make do on the couch. Adults can adapt to sleeping anywhere. Babies can be very unpredictable.

This is a good suggestion

Do a trial run with baby in study in travel cot. If it works fine but if not tell guest you no longer have a spare room but they can either sleep on sofa bed in living room or nearby b&b or Travel Inn.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 06/11/2023 15:11

We had this issue prior to our house extension. We had a sofa bed in DDs room. When guests came to stay she either came into our room or into the study on a travel cot (which had a proper mattresses). Luckily she was a good sleeper so she wasn't phased by the change of location.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/11/2023 15:58

Travel cot in study should be fine

Yes your baby is sleeping well now. Yah 😄😄

But also want them to be able to sleep in other places so good to try our travel cot

They are thin for safety reasons, because of the mesh sides, a thicker mattress can cause babies to get stuck between the mattress and the side of the cot which can then cause breathing difficulty. That's why most travel cots will have a warning in the front of the book saying not to use any different mattresses.

Yes, never put a thicker mattress in a travel cot.
