My ds has just turned 3 and still only says a few words. He's had his hearing checked (all fine) and on waitlist for salt. Anyone's speech delayed kids turn a corner when they turned 3? I'm losing hope he'll ever talk

Hi, my son was the same. I was able to claim disability living allowance once he started nursery and it was obvious his communication was holding him back. I used this to pay for private speech therapy but also still took all nhs sessions. He did really well. The private sessions gave us a lot of homework and taught me how to keep it all playful for him.
The NHS said when he was 2 he would need a specialist school setting for speech but fortunately this was not the case. There are some good websites that help. I will try and add links.

Yes, both my boys has speech delays. My eldest didn't start talking clearly until he was halfway through primary 1 (5yrs) and my second only starting talking just before he started school. Both had speech therapy referral from nursery. They're now 13 and 9 and very articulate, clearly spoken with no long-standing speech issues. They just took a bit longer than their peers.

My son is almost 3 and is speech delayed. He had glue ear between 1 and 2 and various ear infections.

We gave up waiting for the HV service to do anything so as soon as he had his hearing test to confirm all is OK (which took a year from my 1st request)we found a private speech therapist. It's early days but seeing an improvement.

His pronunciation is way off with most words but he is now starting to build little sentences and just starting to use verbs (this is our latest homework).

It feels like a long road ahead however.

My nephews were both slow to talk. There were some concerns. The youngest is now 8 and fully fluent and very verbose! He is still shy with strangers. Both boys very capable and issues.
It takes time, help from speech therapy also fine and good.

My DS’s speech was very delayed. He hardly spoke at all at 3, and when he did, it wasn’t clear.
He started blocks of speech therapy from 2.9, I think.

His speech was crystal clear at aged 4 and a couple of months, his language exploded too. He was discharged from speech therapy and even his teacher would never have known that he had any difficulties.
It never impacted his reading, phonics etc either (I presumed it would).

Assuming that it is only a speech delay and no other issues, I would keep positive. I know it’s very hard when you hear other kids his and speaking in full sentences Flowers

DS3 hardly spoke any words at 3. At 4 spoke indistinctly. Had speech & language therapy: weekly sessions with a truly gifted SALT who made it great fun.

He's now 28 & has the gift of the gab. Career as an estate agent which uses this skill.
