Baby won’t let me cut her toenails

Looking for advice - my 9mo baby will not let me cut her toenails. She won’t keep still and thrashes about. If I try and do it when she’s asleep she wakes up immediately. They’re starting to bend round over the ends of the toes 😔

My technique is to let DS watch cocomelon on my phone to distract him, sit him on my knee.. grab a toe and clip.

HelterSkelter224 · 02/11/2023 19:04

My 2yo is still a nightmare but when she was that age I would wait for her to be asleep (in footless PJs) and sneak her feet out of her sleeping bag lol

I used to do it when my DCs were asleep!

The cutting when asleep comes later.

Just sit her on your lap, hold her firmly, wrap one arm around her tummy and hold her arm out straight.

Or ask partner to hold her whilst you cut

Game changer! :)

I used a spinning file thing, albeit an adult one for scraping dead skin off my heels but just be careful if you decide to buy one because they get hot if they go against skin!

ThomasinaLivesHere · 02/11/2023 19:20

I used to find it difficult too. I tried with a nail file. Luckily now DS is two I can do it when he sleeps.

Wow thanks - I’ve never seen anything like that before. Might come in handy with new baby.

It's basically a safety issue though isn't it. Same with brushing teeth later, you have to do it even if they don't like it. Try distraction, cartoons, songs etc but essentially be firm and calm and get it done.

Forward-facing in a sling works for us

Smartiepants79 · 02/11/2023 19:26

Get someone to help. One holds her and the other snips.

Autumn1990 · 02/11/2023 19:28

Mine helpfully chew their toenails so I’ve never cut them.

DisingenuousBatshittery · 02/11/2023 19:33

I swear one of DSs first phrases was about the "invisible blood" cascading everywhere when we cut his toenails. He's nearly 15 and still as dramatic about it - and still needs it doing to him as he can't even bear to cut his own nails 😁Here's hoping yours is a short term issue.

Aparecium · 02/11/2023 19:57

I used to take mine to sandpits and let them play with no shoes on. The sand 'sanded' their nails. Though we used to get some odd looks in wintertime!

caringcarer · 02/11/2023 20:09

One hold, one cut. It will take about 2-3 mins per foot.

100% agree! Doesn't hurt them and you don't panic you're gonna cut half their finger off 😅

Soapon · 02/11/2023 20:20

Cocomelon when he was little, now he’s 2 when he is asleep! I thought he hasn’t noticed but he told nursery id cut his fingers off overnight……

savemyears · 02/11/2023 20:32

I used to have to do them in the high chair while they were eating, it was the only way they were distracted enough and caged in.
As toddlers I had to do it when they were asleep but only when napping so it didn't matter too much if they woke up.
I honestly thought I'd be doing this until they were fully grown but at age 4 they've finally allowed me to cut them whilst awake and knowing what I was up to.
Tiny nail clippers have made it a lot easier, I can't do scissors or files despite trying both.

AnotherCountryMummy · 02/11/2023 20:41

I used to do it when they were in the car seat. I left some clippers in the car for a long time. For some reason he was always calm and liked to watch, and was obviously restrained too.
