How to get a non verbal child to communicate needing the bathroom at nursery?

DD is 3,5 and all of a sudden just decided to start using the toilet at home with hardly any prompts or accidents.
The issue is she is suspected ASD and practically non verbal at nursery. She has been going for over two years now. With a prompt she will sit and use the loo/potty but now she is in preschool room with a larger ratio and much more outdoor free time, she wont communicate the need for the toilet and have accidents.

What is the best way to work with nursery to work around this?

Does your little one use any signing?

Can nursery (and at home) have symbols or object signifiers on hand for her to use? It may take a while but given effort and continuity it could/ should help

What does she do at home does she make a dash for the bathroom? Have you told nursery she does this I'd maybe ask them to give her a cue so maybe a picture or a "thing" that she can give to her keyworker that she needs the toilet .

To be honest this is a slightly bigger question about what personalised support your dd is getting at nursery generally. She should really have a plan in place or maybe even accessing external support so that she is on assessment pathways ahead of starting school. Sorry if all of this is already happening. I agree with the suggestions above, but as a school senco (special needs teacher) I’d be wondering what the plan is. They should have a senco too and it might be worth asking her key worker if you can meet with them together. Good luck.

Agree very much with this.

Signing or Pec signs (pictures)in a communication book. You can find both on the internet. Hope this helps.

Support plan which directs carers to show the loo visual or loo sign hourly so she is prompted to use the loo when needed

When you say practically non verbal at nursery, what do you mean by this? Is she non verbal or speech delayed generally or is it a nursery specific thing? They seem to be two different issues.

She has overall speech delay (suspected ASD) and until this year was completely non-verbal outside of the home including nursery. She is verbal now but at nursery still does not communicate with them.

I am going to use a visual aid every time she uses the toilet at home and nursery will then use the visual with her. They say they prompt every half hour but my issue is if they are for example playing outside she wont be able to tell them she needs to go.
