Do your children change out of their school uniform when they get home?

Yes straight out of uniform as soon as she's home. Not only because it's more comfy but the amount of germs, snot (not necessarily their own either!) and god knows what else that gets on her uniform is not something I want spread all over my sofas 🙈😂

I have to offer a box of tissues to year 4 nose pickers and lower down the school there are far more of them, they don't wash their hands properly after going to the toilet as well. They play with the soles of their shoes, stick their hands down their pants to scratch. Then they touch tables, chairs, door handles, shared pencils etc so my children got changed and washed their hands the second they got in.

Mine changed into comfy joggers and t shirts which then went into a worn it once drawer which meant they wore them the next day too.

Everyone I know has their primary age kids change out of their uniform straight after school. I remember in high school we did mooch around in them for quite a while afterwards. But that was back in the days when you could spend 3 hours walking home from school with your mates pottering about in Blockbuster, super drug, at the park and at your mates houses on way home. How life was simple before mobile phones!

Yes definitely DS is 4 and we want to keep his uniform jumpers as stain free as possible, he finishes at 2 so he changes his clothes when he gets home so we can go out to the park etc, some days he stays in after schools club, wearing his uniform, on those days he gets home at 5 and he still changes into normal clothes for dinner and play before bed

DappledThings · 30/10/2023 19:54

No. Never did it myself, never suggested my children do. Unless it's swimming, Beavers, Rainbows etc.

Never found it uncomfortable, or any other clothes uncomfortable so never felt the need to change. The phenomenon of women tearing off their bras as soon as they walk through the door was something I was also unaware of till MN. Never felt the need to remove that either!

RecycleMePlease · 30/10/2023 19:57

Yes, if he's in real uniform, because he only has 2 pairs of trousers/jumpers, and is incapable of doing anything without getting is white shirt filthy.

No if he's in sports kit, because it's not like food is any worse than grass and mud to get out.

Bournetilly · 30/10/2023 20:03

Yes for comfort into loungewear / PJs. I get changed myself as soon as I come in the house into loungewear / PJs.

I didn’t get changed after school when I was a child and was never bothered but I couldn’t do that now.

Nicesalad · 30/10/2023 20:07

Yes, they have a good wash of hands and face and change into normal clothes straight away.

Splodgerbodgerbadger · 30/10/2023 20:08

Yes, we always did as kids too. More so with high school.

Gaslit3 · 30/10/2023 20:11

I don't have a rule, sometimes they come in and get into pyjamas, in the summer they come home and put shorts and t shirt on or swimwear if the paddling pool is out, otherwise they might stay in uniforms until bedtime. If they have clubs then they get changed for that, so it's a mix really.
My parents used to make us change out of school uniform immediately because they would just give them a wipe down and air them for the next day, and wash them at the weekend. My mum is baffled at me giving my DC fresh uniform every day, I do a lot of washing so she might be onto something!

ButtonDownBev · 30/10/2023 20:14

Dc6 comes in, strips down to his pants immediately 😂😂
I have to try and get him into his oodie or comfy clothes but he really just wants to be in his pants bless him or I suspect if I let him totally have his way he wouldn't even keep his pants on lol

ohme · 30/10/2023 20:14

One of mine kept it on until shower time around 9pm, another changed and went out usually after school (upper end of primary onwards) and another always went straight for PJs. They are not all the same.

HoHoHoliday · 30/10/2023 20:15

Yes, change as soon as get home, because I like the mentality that the uniform is for school. Put uniform on to learn, take it off to relax. I would also encourage to keep uniform (well, all clothes) clean and tidy as far as possible. Not just to reduce laundry but to encourage respect for belongings.

Growlybear83 · 30/10/2023 20:18

Yes, my daughter always changed out of her uniform as soon as she got home, unless she went to tea with a friend and was home much later. I always did the same when I was young too. Not eating dinner in her school clothes meant thst I could get two or even three wears out of a skirt before washing it.

northernlightsareamazing · 06/11/2023 22:18

None of my DDs change out of uniform after school unless it's for a sports activity. Eldest DD(14) is still sprawled on the sofa wearing hers, although she has taken her blazer off and loosened her tie/undone top button. I never bothered when I was at school and I've never seen the point in making mine change since they generally have a clean shirt each day and skirts/jumpers last a few days.
DH wears a suit for work and often just takes his jacket off and loosens his tie since he doesn't get in until after 8pm, so maybe they see that and think why bother?

Sameasyounow · 06/11/2023 22:19

Straight off, clothes in the wash and dc in the bath every day

Rainallnight · 07/11/2023 03:09

This thread has been a real eye opener for me. It’s never occurred to me to change the kids after school. Their (primary) uniform is joggers/leggings, polo shirt and sweater so very comfy. And I definitely don’t need more washing in my life.

WeirdPookah · 07/11/2023 12:16

As school uniforms here are like tiny little business men, stiff shirts and ties, they always get changed.

As they only wear the comfy clothes for a couple of hours, they wear them several afternoons. So not really much more washing, two tops, two trousers each a week.

Comefromaway · 07/11/2023 12:19

Neither of mine ever changed, right up until they left high school, unless they had an activity/event after school.

WinkyTinky · 07/11/2023 12:25

My two used to stay in their uniforms when they were in primary - polo shirt and jumper. But now they're in secondary they get changed the minute they get home. Nobody wants to relax in the evening wearing a shirt and tie and blazer! I've also been pretty relaxed about washing, two days wear out of a shirt / polo shirt is fine, and three days or even more from trousers if they're not dirty. I've never understood those who buy five sets of uniform, or wash them every single day.

Queucumber · 07/11/2023 12:30

All change here. I never gave it much thought.

Growing up, we changed out of uniforms as soon as we got home and my mother always changed out of her work clothes (think nice blouses and pencil skirts) into something better suited to dogs, children and cooking.

ManchesterLu · 07/11/2023 12:31

If there are items of uniform that will last another day, they're changed. If they're going in the wash anyway, they might as well stay in uniform.

Amy71452 · 07/11/2023 14:03

We wash the uniform every day so mostly leave it on when she gets home. We do sometimes go to pyjamas earlier in winter, but the summer dresses are very comfy for her, so isn't desperate for change
