Baby night feeds

My little one is still waking up in the night for a feed he’s 7 months old tomorrow. He’s already started weaning but we’re on purées still at the moment as he’s only just started. He has a dream feed and then wakes up once during the night for a bottle. Is this normal? Or should I try to wean him off this bottle?

No don't stop his bottle, he obviously still needs it, milks their main nutrition source til 1. Mines 13mo and still wakes once in night for a feed.

Mine continued to wake for feeds until about 15 -18 months after that would ask for water (although I still would have given milk they just stopped asking). But under one milk is their nutritional base so don't stop. Also, night weaning doesn't mean they'll sleep through if that's what you're hoping!

I should have said feed in the night, not wake for feeds.

What does the rest of his day look like? Is he getting enough naps and not getting overtired throughout the day? Ideally if he’s taking enough milk during the day he won’t need it during the night. How is the routine pre-bedtime?

Also what time is he up in the morning? If your day ‘starts’ too late sometimes this can cause a knock on effect to them not having enough milk across the day and then needing it in the night, then because they’ve been fed they’re sleeping in later in the morning again

Plenty do still feed overnight at this age but no they don't need to if they are getting enough intake in the day. Physiologically they're capable of taking on enough in the daytime to last through the night from about 6 months. You could try gradually reducing the amount you're giving in the bottle overnight until you get down to nothing? Meanwhile do a big push on daytime intake to make sure he's getting enough. Or if you're happy doing the night feed just continue with it. It's each to their own really.

My daughter had a 5oz bottle at night until at 15 months and from then to 3 she had a 1oz oat if she asked for it

We our under dietitian and paediatric support and both have been ok with her continuing having milk overnight. At 7 months she was having 5+ breastfeeds and at 10 months 2 bottles - we were in hospital at this point and no concerns were raised

If he's only waking once a night, honestly just keep following your baby's cue. He will outgrow the feed in time.

Highonthehills · 30/10/2023 20:16

I would love my baby to only wake once at night, mine is up about 3/4 times to breastfeed but I've just accepted it. Babies get their main nutrition and calories from milk until 1 so if he needs fed id feed him. My first was bottle fed and woke once a night till 1, he was a big baby and needed the calories. I think modern society has this idea that babies should sleep through the night from a young age when this is unnatural and not always best for baby

My son dropped most overnight bottles between 9 and 10 months but still needs them occasionally at 11 months (I assume with growth spurts).

Cdoc · 30/10/2023 20:58

My 7.5 month old still wakes 3-4 times every single night for a feed! Breastfed but still, I read that some babies get 25% of their daily milk intake during the night so it can be totally normal. I wish it wasn’t!

My DD only dropped night feeding around 15-16 months when we started giving her more food in the evening time.

InTheRainOnATrain · 30/10/2023 21:09

Mine had both stopped at that age. I used to give them Weetabix and banana before bed.

yikesanotherbooboo · 30/10/2023 22:37

One of mine had stopped at 7 months I am surprised that you think it is out of the ordinary. It iss completely normal.
