Autism signs in 9 month old??

Namechange10122 · 29/10/2023 20:27

Just wondering whether baby could have autism signs this early.

baby doesn’t respond to his name but if I say mama he does look (I do wonder whether he thinks that’s his name) from me saying it to him or if it reminds him of ms rachel

hes learning to crawl but in the meantime for months loves us holding him and him bouncing up and down, doesn’t like to sit still at all

he makes good eye contact and is very smiley. Doesn’t clap yet or point at things

he also kind of holds his left wrist and then watches his hand twist and rotate occasionally. Also loves flicking things as in trying to get them to spin. Today at a party he wouldn’t settle as alot going on and noisy yet when it’s less people and quieter he is happy. Very nosey loves watching and looking at people and being out in crowds but I guess a kid today wouldn’t leave him alone pulling his toys off him etc. also still kind of jumps/walks on his tip toes although starting to flatten feet trying to walk.

I guess I don’t know if this is normal for his age and other babies do the same or are the early indicators for autism? Any advice or experience would love to hear

seems normal to me

pink970 · 29/10/2023 20:29

Very difficult to be certain for sure at that age

Crunchingleaf · 29/10/2023 20:31

Way way too young at this age to say going by your post. Babies are constantly changing and even in a month they will have progressed hugely.

Is there any particular reason your worried?

I have a 9yo autistic boy who had none of these symptoms as a baby. His eye contact was inconsistent (sometimes very fleeting, sometimes very intense) and that was the only thing. Now, he's older, there are lots of symptoms that I could list, but the primary point of my post is that I wouldn't change a hair on his head or take away the autism if I could - it's integral to who he is and what we love about him.

By all means, watch your beautiful boy closely and ask for support for him if you are concerned as he grows, but please don't let this worry spoil his precious babyhood for you.

Op I knew at this age my ds had autism and he does. He’s lovely and doing very well by the way!

I would suggest pushing for a hearing test. My ds needed grommets but we didn’t realise and he ended up with a bad speech delay which is now sorted after speech therapy. My younger ds had grommets at age 1 and no speech delay. Human speech sits in a particular frequency range which we didn’t realise. We assumed ds could hear a dog barking and birds singing so couldn’t be deaf.

to be honest it didn’t enter my mind until my partner mentioned that children with autism don’t like a lot of noise or busyness etc. I’m not bothered either way, I will love him the same regardless I would just like to help him the best I can but I’m aware it is too early to tell.

@MissHavershamReturns interesting re hearing, when I say mamma i a high pitch voice he looks. Can definitely hear the dog barking as it’s very loud and makes him jump then he laughs. Will speak to HV at his next check up soon tk check on his hearing!

thank you all

Startling at loud noise can also be a sign of hearing issues we were told as the world is generally quite muffled for them so loud noise is particularly scary.

MissHavershamReturns · 29/10/2023 20:51

Hv ime are not always very knowledgeable about hearing so might be necessary to go to gp and really push to get a hearing test.

Crunchingleaf · 29/10/2023 20:57

Babies do lots of things that would be concerning in an older child, the majority grow out of those behaviours.

A hearing test is no harm though to make sure they are hearing as they should.

@Namechange10122 hey any updates on your baby please? X

Namechange10122 · 10/06/2024 16:37

Hi all

he is 16 months now. Started walking around 13 months old, didn’t crawl for long. Doesn’t rotate/flick the wrists anymore. Still has good eye contact and loves cuddles and affection. In terms of talking, he is babbling dada and mama but I don’t think he knows the words properly yet. We were at a party a few weeks back with alot of noise and people he didn’t know and he hated it, I think shy/scared when he doesn’t know people because if he knows everyone and it’s loud etc he is fine. Kind of claps but wouldn’t do it if I asked or showed. Doesn’t point or wave either. However I am less concerned now he has started to babble at least. Definitely responds to name now although selective especially when doing something he shouldn’t be! Xx

I would try Hanen techniques to bring his communication along as it sounds a little bit - but not a lot - delayed. A little goes a long way and 16 months is a great chance to catch it early. Best of luck!
