Halloween freaking out my 4 year old

It just took me over two hours to get my 4 year old to sleep, and he is in my bed not his. He always goes to sleep in his bed and usually takes half an hour. He kept repeatedly asking if monsters are real, if ghosts are real, if vampires are real, if bad guys are real, and do they kill people. It was a lot! I've never had him mention death and he knew more than I thought he knew, I don't know if he's picking it up from his friends at school. He seems so young. I'm guessing it's the time of year! Has anyone else had this? I'm worrying a little about handling it because he always goes to sleep so well in his own bed and hasn't said he's scared of the dark or whatever so I just don't want this to be the start of a downward spiral. Does anyone else's child seem to be freaked out by Halloween?!

Already woken up crying once which again isn't like him! Sad

Bless him, sounds tough. I think the main thing is reassuring him that it's ok to feel scared and that he is safe. Are there any 'funny' Halloween themed things you can watch together, Hotel Transylvania etc?

My 4 year old is a bit like this with a couple of books at the moment although, so far, he seems okay about Halloween. I don't know if it's a particularly subject matter so much as he's suddenly got a real awareness of being scared. So tonight he didn't want to go to bed because he was scared of getting stuck in the mud in the park tomorrow (we'd been talking about going on a bear hunt which has always been his favourite book). I think it's just a tough age and all you can do is reassure them that you'll be there.

Has he watched something he shouldn't have? Maybe at a friends house?

I don't indulge in halloween yet my 2 year old understands what a witch is and asks me if things are scary or not presumably from nursery activities. I think media has blown Halloween out of proportion and that it does more harm than good to little ones, especially on an emotional and spiritual level. I try and avoid as much as possible while I can.
