Stopping all milk - 14 month old

At 14 month, does my toddler still need milk/milk alternative?

I am breastfeeding him and having to cut all sorts out of my diet as he is allergic to a lot. He is under a dietician and consultant but our next appointment isn’t until January and I’m struggling 😭

I have researched online but just looking to hear from anyone who has been through something similar or had a toddler who didn’t take any milk at this age.

*he can get hypoallergenic formula on prescription but he won’t even sniff it, even with vanilla essence and flavouring in etc

My DS stopped having milk at 16 months, he was on cows milk by this point and was down to only a bottle on an evening and in the end he started refusing it so that was that.
Is yours allergic to all milk? So even oat/soya etc?

KenIsAnAccessory · 28/10/2023 20:26

It should be fine. Just make sure he's having good couple of portions of fortified dairy alternative a day and/or calcium supplement and then plenty of calories if he's not taking any milk. My DS had CMPA (amongst other allergies) and I stopped breastfeeding at a year-ish too. He's absolutely fine now-grown out of it! Fingers crossed yours does too, it makes life a lot easier!

My first child self-weaned around that age. You can give cows milk if you want (obviously to non-allergic children), but you don’t have to at that age).
Remember to drop the feeds gradually or you could end up with an infection.

2 of my DC completely refused formula and cows milk from 11 months.

Turns out all 4 of them have lactose intolerance.

Is he allergic to all milk alternatives eg oat/coconut?

MCMP13 · 28/10/2023 20:43

Thank you for your replies.

He has IGE allergies to milk, oat, soya, egg and almond. Have tried coconut and pea which he hasn’t reacted to but he just refuses to drink them and it is such a battle 😭 to be fair I wouldn’t drink the pea 😂 I can’t wait till he grows out of them, if he does 🙏🙏

@ReadRum to be fair I don’t even know if he’s getting a lot anyway when he feeds now. He has a morning and night feed and then sometimes once during the night (for comfort I think) but if I ever pump when I’m not with him I barely get a few ounces x

Is he eating a varied diet and having vitamin drops or similar? If so stop stressing he doesn't need milk.

SErunner · 28/10/2023 21:34

I don't quite understand what you're asking. Yes he still needs milk but that doesn't have to be drunk. From 12 months onwards it's recommended they have 500ml whole milk daily plus a multivitamin, but that can be in the form of yoghurts etc. I can't understand from your post if he is or isn't able to have dairy. If he can't I would take advice from a dietitian regarding a plan.

MCMP13 · 28/10/2023 22:15

@SErunner my post quite clearly says what I’m asking: At 14 month, does my toddler still need milk/milk alternative?

As I said, he has IGE allergies to a lot of things including cows milk so no he cannot have yoghurts or other forms. As I also said, we are under a dietician and consultant however our next appointment isn’t until January so I am just wondering others experiences of what their toddlers had at this age.

I would contact a private dietitian and get advice earlier in that case. Hopefully it would only be a one off consult so not too costly. I'd take their advice rather than people's on mumsnet.

Neither of min drank milk once they stopped breastfeeding- it's a post war idea feeding kids another species milk!

Just make sure he has plenty of calcium and protein

Mummy2C · 29/10/2023 06:46

Hi, my LO also has allergies. I think you can cut out milk as long as they have other alternatives - yogurt/ cheese etc.
Have you tried creating a milkshake?
This milk might be available soon:
