Winter nursery clothes

What do your toddlers wear to nursery in winter? My daughter prefers leggings and a top to tights and dress but it’s too cool now for leggings. She’s been going in wearing fleecy joggers this week - surprisingly hard to buy for little girls. What other options are there?

I used to work in nurseries and always felt quite sorry for the little girls in winter shivering in thin leggings while the boys all had thick warm joggers or lined jeans on!

Mums might not get cold in thick leggings just nipping in and out of the car or shops but small kids are often outside for long periods and little girls' leggings are no thicker or warmer than t-shirt fabric.

Boys also usually had much warmer and more robust/practical shoes too.

Our daughter wears leggings all year round? Just layer up the top half? When it's cold she has a vest, long sleeve top, jumper, coat, hat. Never had any problems.

bravotango · 27/10/2023 22:37

Fleece lined joggers and sweatshirt sets - we have a draw full of sets just for nursery and he gets a long sleeved vest on underneath. Buy from the boys section, we have loads in v unisex colours!

Jumper and long sleeved top with fleece lined leggings from Next. They are very thick and cosy. I get them in lots of colours but mainly send her in navy and black ones to nursery! Sometimes it will be a sweater dress with tights and boots as she loves wearing a dress! H&M also do the fleece lined leggings but they aren't quite as thick but are cheaper and some of them on 3 for 2 in store.

Bibbitybobbitty · 27/10/2023 23:25

CM here, we're outdoors a.lot so leggings alone aren't enough now. Add tights beneath & should be ok. Layers are best - if nursery uses outside a lot then great to send a decent fleece lined puddle suit(waterproof not just showerproof), wee ones always complain of cold feet - welly socks + snow boots instead of just wellies are also better. Obviously hats & gloves as well + decent coat.
Buy boys clothes if necessary for fleece lined jeans/joggers but next/h&m are usually a good bet for these. Nothing wrong with boys layering up with tights either if it's really cold!

bryceQ · 27/10/2023 23:50

Uniqlo heat tech stuff is fab really soft and washes well. Good to layer up

Arghghghghfg · 27/10/2023 23:52

Next fleece lined leggings (although they're on the shorter side so no good if your kid is tall)

avemariiiaa · 28/10/2023 10:56

So confused about leggings seemingly not being enough.

They are comfy, stretchy, good for climbing and crawling and sitting comfortably.

It's the top half of the body that needs layering up when it's cold out.

I can honestly say I have never bought fleece lined leggings or questioned whether standard leggings are enough.

Thank you so much. That makes a lot of sense. Leggings & tights it is for her!

@avemariiiaa I agree. We don't live in the arctic. If the beast from the east rolls up again I'll perhaps invest in some thermals but we've had no issues just layering up the top half as you say. Thick socks when cold/in wellies and a puddlesuit on top if it's wet/snowy. We do live south. Perhaps it's more of a need if you're north/Scotland?

NerrSnerr · 28/10/2023 14:24

Mine wore leggings all year round. We had fleece lined ones for really cold days but not October. Some children feel the cold more than others. My son has never worn a school jumper and he's in year 2. If I put one on him he'd take it off at the start of the day and not put it on again.

Wolvesart · 28/10/2023 14:33

I wonder if they think that leggings are not a substitute for trousers or joggers and as they become toddlers and are no longer babies it tends to look a bit ick if they are wearing fitted clothing with a short top

It looks ick? My eldest is 9 and her friends all still wear leggings. She's about to go and do a sports comp in her kit which is black leggings and a t shirt like all the adults wear as well.

DC goes to nursery in leggings, joggers or jeans and they've all been fine. Assuming you're in the UK, it's not really that cold at the moment. We still get "No coat!" and wanting to play outside in just long sleeved tops without hoodies or jackets.

If you're wanting a water resistant option, you could always get a lined puddlesuit thing.

Plumful · 28/10/2023 16:25

Boys tracksuits on Vinted

Blessedbethefruitz · 28/10/2023 19:01

Agree that a jumper is needed between top and coat. My dd wears jogging bottoms now, it's too cold for garden time in just leggings and puddlesuit for lots of them. They have girls ones everywhere though - h&m, m&s, primark, asda. We also have reused from older ds.

Is it much colder elsewhere in the UK? I'm really surprised by how many people are posting saying it's too cold - it's 11 degrees up here.

WeWereInParis · 28/10/2023 19:48

We always bought joggers from the boys' section for DD, as I agree, they're harder to find for girls.

Superscientist · 28/10/2023 20:00

My daughter is in her third winter of wearing leggings. I avoid the super thin leggings but most of them are fair game
She wears a long or short sleeved vest (or t shirt since potty training) depending on how cold. With another tshirt on top. For colder days she has either a cardigan or hoodie on top so they can add an extra layer under her coat when outside

We find that the temperature in the nursery is fairly constant from October to march except maybe if there it's icy outside as they have the thermostat at a fix temperature

At home we have some thicker socks she where's in the house but they are a bit bulky in shoes for nursery. We probably have to vary her clothes at home more as have the heating set quite low and turn it up only when we feel the chill which depends on how active we are being in the house and if we have low grade bugs and similar so the temperature is more varied

CattingAbout · 28/10/2023 20:02

Loz2033 · 27/10/2023 18:56

Do they not just mean add a sweatshirt or cardi over the top?

That was my thought too

2chocolateoranges · 28/10/2023 20:05

I work in an outdoors nursery and we encourage layers . Easier to take off if too warm or add to if they are cold.

some of our little girls wear tights and leggings, most wear fleecy leggings/joggers or 2 pairs of leggings with a vest, short sleeved t shirt , long sleeved shirt, and a jumper.

o do have to say most of the kids don’t feel the cold and we have to remind her to put a jacket on as it gets so cold at times.

Blessedbethefruitz · 28/10/2023 22:01

@Scirocco no, I'm southeast! I just had to buy vests and a thick fluffy onesie to wear out over normal clothes for my youngest (20 months) because she couldn't stand being out for more than 20 minutes and would beg to come home. I'm still in leggings and sleeveless dresses! I didn't have this with my oldest, some children must feel it much more than others.

Blessedbethefruitz · 28/10/2023 22:05

Caveat, we're on the coast. My oldest (4.5) is still asking (and going for ages) to paddle in the sea. A cold child is new to me.

PaperDoIIs · 28/10/2023 22:40

If you look online, you can also buy fleece lined leggings if that's what she prefers.
