Progression of autistic child

Hello!

I have a 4 year old autistic son who was diagnosed at 3 who is non verbal, still in nappies, has really bad meltdowns, has a very restricted diet and hardly sleeps. He isn't really fussed by change which I'm thankful for but really hates loud crowded places.

I was curious on how much similar children developed?

He has just started sitting on the toilet and using it when I use the word 'pee', has started high fiving when prompted and sometimes echos "E-I-E-I-O" in nursery when old McDonald has a farm is on.

I would love to hear from parents with older children that showed similar traits at 4 to see how they progressed.

Thanks😀

I work with an autistic little boy who is now eight. I didn't know him when he was four, but from his EHCP, it sounds like he was similar to your son at that age.

Now he is "just" verbal - he has quite a good vocabulary but his speech is hard to understand. If you already have an idea what he might be saying and you know him well you can understand him, otherwise it can be quite difficult (and he gets very frustrated when you can't understand him). He can use the toilet independently but needs reminding to wash his hands. He has a very limited diet - always has exactly the same things in his lunchbox each day. He doesn't like loud noises and often wears ear defenders in the classroom. He can get very upset/angry very quickly but will usually calm down quickly once the situation is resolved (like the lid not fitting on his lunchbox or someone sitting in his space) or once you've acknowledged he's upset and explained the situation to him (it's not his turn in the game yet but it might be soon).
