Baby monitors - do you need sound if in next room?

My DD will finally have her own room when we move in a few weeks time. Our current monitor uses our phones for the parent end and I don’t want to leave the sound on overnight (due to other phone notifications and the monitor itself has a static sound). Do we need another sound only monitor if our toddler (15 months) is in the next room? How well can you hear your babies if they are in the next room over without a monitor?

I don't use the sound on ours when he's in the next room- I can definitely hear him if he needs me! He's 13 months. I stopped using the sound because I felt I was really on edge from hearing him shuffle about and make normal 'asleep' noises, so I wasn't getting a good rest between his wakes. I also have white noise in his room which the monitor picks up!

I've got the camera with own monitor so I can have the sound otherwise I wouldn't hear my 13mo. I got a vtech one from boots £55, brilliant night vision

I sleep very deeply so when we moved her out of my room we bought a very basic sound only monitor from Argos. Prior to this we didn't have a monitor and don't use it in the evenings it's just to wake me up.

Could you look into your do not disturb settings on your phone? I think some let you keep some apps on do not disturb whilst other apps are allowed to send notifications.

Do you have any other devices that could be used for the other end?

We don't have the sound on anymore (10.5 months). We can hear him fine, and the monitor was just echoing it and wasn't helpful! It's still handy to see if he's just stirring or awake though.

Does he have health issues?

we use ours for when we're downstairs watching tv, we hear both kids fine from our bedroom, however we do use the camera functions to check in on them too

dementedpixie · 26/10/2023 14:44

I had the parent unit downstairs so we heard the kids when we were downstairs and they were in bed. We heard them fine without it when we were upstairs

We keep the monitor on to see him/check but keep the sound off

Peepshowcreepshow · 26/10/2023 14:48

I never used a monitor, house was small and I could hear her clearly.

SecondUsername4me · 26/10/2023 14:51

We bought a monitor then never used it at home - baby in with us for 6m then when in their own room it was next door (and in a flat so also next door to lounge).

The monitor did come in handy for our annual trip to the in laws who have a massive house - we would dig out the monitors specifically as we knew we couldn't hear them in bed when we were sat up of an evening.

I never had a monitor. I’m in a house, and DC’s bedroom was next to ours.

Jamaisy82 · 26/10/2023 15:08

My daughter has been in her room from 6 months and have always used a camera 20 quid from amazon and watch it on my tablet or phone when she naps and also during the night.
Our room is next door and even though she is 13 months now I still watch on monitor it just gives me peace of mind. I like to be able to see and hear rather than just hear her.

PinkRoses1245 · 26/10/2023 15:12

I've never had a monitor, at 15 months I definitely wouldn't think you need one.

Totalwasteofpaper · 26/10/2023 15:20

My DD is on a different floor and I do NOT need a monitor to hear her 😅

I think you'll be fine unless you want one for comfort/reassurance. I found mine woke me up everytime she turned or made a minor snuffle.

CattingAbout · 26/10/2023 15:26

We only ever used a monitor for times like naps or early evening when we were on a different floor. Never ran it overnight while we were in bed in the next room - could definitely hear baby!

wishIwasonholiday10 · 26/10/2023 16:59

Thanks all! We will try without the sound in the first instance. Obviously I want to hear her if she needs me but also don’t want to woken up at every tiny noise.
