Where do you change your baby's nappy?

Where do you change your baby's nappy? I have a designated changing area in one of the bedrooms, with everything there readily to hand, and I think it's important to get into a proper routine. My sister-in-law is totally disorganised, and she changes her DSs nappy whenever it needs doing wherever she happens to be at the time, well almost. Her house is a real tip, with nappies and things all over the place, and she would'nt be upset if she read this! My DS1 will usually tell me "dirty nappy mummy", and knows we must go off upstarirs to sort it out. What does anyone else do?

At first I would walk all the way upstairs, had a lovely changing table with everything all ready, dettol wipes the lot, nappy bin by the side etc. etc. Now it's wherever I can catch DS!

Couldn't be arsed to go upstairs every time to change a nappy. I have 2 lo's and i am a CM. I have a nappy box downstairs and i change wherever i like.

You obviously only have 1 dc then?

Wherever I happen to be.

Upstairs we have a changing unit, so if upstairs I do it there.

Downstairs I have a basket with nappies, wipes, sacks etc so do it on the floor if downstairs.

If out we do it on the floor, with a travel changing mat, or standing up in the toilet (there are no changing facilities for 4 year olds in nappies... )

But I have 2 in nappies (1 with SN) and am far too busy to go up and down the stairs every time I need to change a nappy

tassisssss · 09/03/2008 16:28

i usually change nappies upstairs on dd's changing mat

with ds we switched to cloth when he was about 16 months and changed him in the bathroom from then on

in the early days (when the smell's less offensive and the dirty nappies much more frequent, i'd change wherever i am.

(i think you're being rather judgemental of your SIL)

Well, that's all well and good, but yesterday my friendly neighbour called around about something, and I asked her in for a coffee. No sooner had I done so, but I could tell DS had filled his nappy, so I excused myself, took him off upstairs to change it, with no fuss or embarrasment. My neighbour was quite happy waiting drinking her coffee, and even offered to change the nappy herself!

I used to change mine on my lap, so wherever we were really, as long as it was private enough for their modesty. And providing I had a nappy and wipes with me...

LadyOfWaffle · 09/03/2008 16:34

If I had someone over I would change DS in the bedroom or something, but at my mums or MILs I would just change him on the livingroom floor on the travel mat. (Unless they had guests...)

aGalChangedHerName · 09/03/2008 16:34

Sorry but i had to lol at that post Boomally.

I don't actually care if it's a dirty nappy or not. And neither would any friends or neighbours. Fuss or embarrassment??

Boomally · 09/03/2008 16:41

cece, I admire you if you can change a nappy on your lap, particularly an older child. My mum said she used to change my nappy on her lap, but somehow I can't imagine it. The problem is I have a bit of a back problem, so I need to have the nappy changing area on a flat surface at about waist height, which is why I've set up everything in one of the bedrooms.

i've got 2 in nappies... if we are downstairs i do it on the living room floor, if we are upstairs on the changing mat there and if its in the middle of the night i change my newborn on my bed!

cece · 09/03/2008 16:54

boomally,
it is easy once you get the hang of it. I think I did it till DS was dry, so about 2 and half. They are sideways over your lap. You lift their legs and change nappy. As he got bigger though his head owuld hang down a bit! and he developed strong stomach muscles! I too suffer from a bad back...

I used to get lots of admiring comments on my technique

llareggub · 09/03/2008 16:59

I have a basket with all the kit in it which I keep under the stairs. When downstairs I change him in the living room and the dirty nappy goes straight outside into the bin.

When upstairs I change him in the bathroom. I've never thought of having a changing unit set up in the bedroom.

Initially the idea was that with a basket I could hook it under my arm and take it over the house with me. I never did that though.

The changing mat lives behind one of the sofas and gets put away after use and cleaning.

I don't know anyone that actually used a changing unit...

sweetkitty · 09/03/2008 17:10

Living room floor on changing mat, I have a designated cupboard with everything in it.

needmorecoffee · 09/03/2008 17:15

living room floor. At 4 she's too big to lug upstairs.

BoysOnToast · 09/03/2008 17:19

gosh boomally, arent you pleased with yourself?

i think its wonderful that you feel you have everything sorted and orderly and it all works for you. bravo. but why oh why are you spendign your time and energy looking down your nose at people who do it differently to you?

Bouncingturtle · 09/03/2008 17:30

Boomally - you do sound very judgy towards your sil - why is it any of your business what her house is like?

To answer your question - I have a changing mat and box of bits downstairs in the lounge, so during the day I change ds on the floor, at night I change him on the changing table in our bedroom (he sleeps with us atm).
Admittedly DH changes him upstairs all the time - simply because he is not comfy changing ds on the floor.

sweetkitty · 09/03/2008 18:48

Toddlers are a different matter trying to chase after them to put a pull-up on, could be half way up the stairs.

Haylstones · 09/03/2008 19:01

With dd I changed her on the floor on amat wherever I was. Ds is only 2 weeks old and I had a csection so we have a changing table in the dining room downstairs and a cot top changer in our bedroom upstairs. I just couldn't face bending down to change on the floor!

CarGirl · 09/03/2008 19:03

I've always had a cot top changer with everything at hand in drawers next to it. I've got bad knees so can't change on the floor. When I had to in (cloth) nappies and only a 14 month age gap and chronic spd I also had a cheapo ikea change unit downstairs as well - was the best £20 I ever spent that change unit

PMSL at this thread.

Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive!

colditz · 09/03/2008 19:06

Cod, you have a great deal to answer for this weekend!

lackaDAISYcal · 09/03/2008 19:07

On my lap....she is too wriggly to change on the floor or our lovely bought for the purpose changing table .

IK usually keep my nappies and potions to hand in one of those lidded boxes from mothercare, so it's always all together in the one place.
