12 week old has a cough

I'm probably worrying for nothing but best being safe.

My toddler has had a stinking cold and cough but thankfully at the other end of it now.

Since yesterday my little baby girl who's 12 weeks old seems to have picked up the cough. She's not chesty, breathing heavily and is still feeding and has wet nappies.

At what point do I make an appointment to the GP? As I read online under 4 months they need medical treatment or is this rubbish?

I just don't want to waste anyone's time and it feels like forever ago I had a newborn.

Thank you (from a very anxious mum)

Also - do I give her calpol even though she seems well to help ease the cough? As I also read not to if she doesn't have a temperature. Thanks

u will never be wasting anyones time when you are concerned about a newborn.
Get her checked, she is so small, my baby was 6 weeks old when he developed rsv, it was horrendous.
If her breathing has changed and is heavy like you describe then she needs to be checked

Yes give her calpol to ease any discomfort she might have, even just a cold can be awful unsettling for smalll baby

Look at her chest and ribs - if she’s breathing in to her ribs / sucking in her tummy / the muscles under her ribs are pulling in or the muscles around her neck are working then it’s all signs she’s struggling to breath. Also her nose flaring and breathing quickly are both signs of difficult breathing.

if she’s just noisy and sniffly then it’s probably congestion in her upper respiratory tract - you can use the calpol vapour sachets and give calpol

but if you’re not sure, do take her to see the dr - they’d always rather see them. My second got loads of little colds from very early on from her big sister!

Her breathing etc seem normal. Gave her calpol & have the plug in. Will make an appointment first thing as it does sound quite raspy and phlegmy.

Unsure why I have more anxiety this time around!

Thanks everyone for the tips.

Took her to the doctor this morning and all is well. Just caught her sisters cold but her lungs/breathing and chest is all the way it should be.

Still doesn't stop me worrying as she's so tiny!
