Temp of 40 not coming down after calpol and nurofen

Nursery phoned at 1pm to come pick up DD (15 months) I had given her nurofen at 8am just incase as she had been unwell with a bug for a couple of days last week but was much better yesterday and didn’t need any medication and slept all night. When I went to pick her up she was the colour of a tomato and screaming crying. Gave her nurofen in the car and stopped her down to vest. when I got her home she has explosive diarrhoea everywhere when I took her nappy off 🤦‍♀️ Managed to change her and calm her down a little and put her to bed and she slept for 45mins-a poo woke her up so had to change that and she was hysterical while this was happening. Tried to get her to go back but no luck. Gave her calpol at 3pm as fever still 39.8. That was nearly two hours ago and she’s still no better. Completely listless when she’s not screaming and no interest in cartoons. This has never happened before both my children eventually respond and perk up once they have both calpol and nurofen in their system.

I’d call your GP or 111 for advice.

The official advice is to see a doctor if they’re over 3 months old with a temp of 39 degrees or above.

Call 111 or take her to a and e for a check rely on your instincts

TheShellBeach · 24/10/2023 16:47

I'd call 111, OP.

Get some fluids into her and call GP

Listless child needs to seen.

Emoconn · 24/10/2023 17:26

Ok thanks she is perking up a bit now but only when up in our arms. Typical when you are just about to head to A&E. We are lucky the children’s hospital is a six minute drive from our house. Husband is keen to put her to sleep as she is exhausted having missed her naps. Temp down to 38 now. I’m nervous incase he wakes up with temp spiked again. Can’t give anymore medicine till after 6 at earliest. She loses the plot at doctors surgeries and hospitals. Screams the place down when a nurse even checked her bp or temp and gets herself so worked up. It so hard to call it.

OP, she needs to be seen.

Superscientist · 24/10/2023 18:00

I would be trying to get medical advice tonight. As the temp has gone down a call to 111 might be ok rather than a and e.
At our hospital GPs and 111 can do referrals direct to the paeds assessment unit rather than faffing with a and e so if I can I go through GP/111. We have gone from GP at 6pm to paediatrician at 6.30pm like this before

Sunshineclouds11 · 24/10/2023 18:01

Considering she's listless I would get her seen to.

Treesinmygarden · 24/10/2023 18:03

Don't take any chances. Go straight to A&E. Always with a child so young.

Hope she's ok. You don't want her to spike again in the middle of the night.

abc56 · 24/10/2023 18:05

It's always the way that they perk up when you're debating going to the hospital. However she'll probably have a regression in the evening and you'll wish you'd taken her.

It's the listless that would have me concerned rather than the temp.

QuietDragon · 24/10/2023 18:06

She needs to be seen.

Sandalholidays12 · 24/10/2023 18:08

@Emoconn go to A&E. 40 in an adult is extremely highly. Take her now dont bother with 111 they will take hours. Good luck!

Ds2 had a high temperature that would not go down when he was a similar age. They sent a doctor to see him who sent us straight to hospital. The poor boy had a chest infection and ear infection. I always found the doctors are happy to see little ones. He had antibiotics and soon was back to normal.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 24/10/2023 18:54

She needs to be seen. Go to a and e.
Don't take risks with your young child x
