Help with weaning - DS only eats with music

DS is 8 months, he has never been overly keen on eating solids, he refuses to eat unless he has his nursery rhyme music on. I want to stop this, Im worried that when we eat out, he wont eat due to no music of his being on.

When i feed him without the music he makes angry/frustrated straining sounds and refuses the food. I have tried lots of times and i have so far given in, as he refuses.

Any advice?

I'd probably just carry on with it to be honest, he's so little he'll probably forget about it in a couple of weeks and won't need it anymore. Plus you might find he's totally different if he's eating in a different environment too :)

@GlitteryGreen He has been doing it for 2 months now - that music makes him co operate a lot better 🤣

Can i ask when did people find their babies got more into food? My DS isn't fussed about it all, turns most food away

I'd just carry on too! Music on doesn't seem like a massive problem.

My daughter had very very little interest until she was about 14 months. She now never stops eating 😂

I honestly wouldn't worry, music is alright :)

Umm I think my baby got more interested about 9/10 months but to be honest she took to it straight away. There are still days where she barely eats at all though and she's 13 months now.

Could you expand his tastes to include a little pop rock at least. 😁

Music is much better than TV, so could always be worse lol. And out and about there will be lots of other noises and completely different environment so he'll be fine.

My toddler is the same, has an actual tantrum if she was sat down for a meal without the radio/music on. Funnily enough, nursery never had to turn music on for her (and she also eats things there she would never eat at home!)

That’s so sweet!

My DC2 wasn’t that fussed about eating. If he was my first I would have agonised over it, but as I also had a toddler I just put food on the high chair table and let him eat it if he wanted to. About 10 months before he really started eating ‘properly’, whereas DC1 was a voracious eater from the start.

He’s now 12 years and not overly fussed by food. dC1 will eat everything on his plate, and would never ever turn down cake, but DC2 just stops when he’s full. It’s a good thing really!

I wouldn’t worry about it, if you’re out and about then either he’ll be distracted and not notice the lack of music or he won’t eat (and won’t starve). If you’re at family/friends they’ll just think it’s cute.

DuploTrain · 25/10/2023 10:49

Don’t worry, my DS wasn’t particularly interested in food until he was 12 months and then he turned into a ravenous beast for 6 months and would literally need to eat a substantial snack every 2 hours all day.

WHALESURPRISE · 25/10/2023 11:05

Many adults will put on a film or something while they eat, I can't blame him 😁

CoalCraft · 25/10/2023 11:22

Mine both went through phases of this - wouldn't eat unless I was singing a nursery rhyme or distracting with a toy, etc. They grow out of it!

DelilahBucket · 25/10/2023 11:29

I really wouldn't worry about it. You'll probably find if you take him out to eat he will because he's not at home with the association of the music on. He'll be too distracted with all the interesting things going on around him.
