Does anyone know what the colour bandings mean with Read Write Inc in the UK? My child is in Year 1 and the school is only allowed to say your child is average, political correctness gone mad. I am pleased they are average but would be good to understand more about their ability. They have just moved up to the Yellow band and I would be interested to know where that sits and if there are guidelines for each year group and which colour bands they should be in? Thanks

according to a universal chart i found (I'd beeeen looking up separately) yellow is end of reception. Blue is end of reception/beginning of year 1.
green then orange are year 1
turquoise is end of year 1

After yellow i think its orange (or orange is before) then blue, grey then onto guided reading.

They should be onto guided reading by end of year 2. A lot will be onto guided reading by end of year 1.

Different schools do this differently, so answers here might not be very useful. I think a lot of schools are now giving books of mixed bands but focusing on the phonic of the week.

Ultimately, although it can be frustrating not to know where your child is in reading levels, your action would be the same - listen to them read as much as possible, read to them as much as possible, and ask them questions to get them thinking about what they've read.

My son gets all the colours! I don’t think it’s specific to him, just what they hand out!
