Never gave them vitamins. They ate a varied diet and no problems eating veg.

Dd is now 20. I didn't give her any vitamins as a child. No need if you provide a balanced diet.

Another one we’ve used.

As PP said, vitamins are recommended by NHS. Even breastfeeding mums should be giving vitamin D drops from birth (unless combi fed).

cariadlet · 23/10/2023 07:23

I'm happy to admit that the advice is now to give supplements - I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case 20 years ago when dd was a baby (health visitor would have said plus I was obsessive so would have read about it).

www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/weaning-and-feeding/vitamins-for-children/

The NHS does also give good food sources for vitamins A and D so surely a balanced diet will provide those.

The only other recommended supplement is vitamin D. The main source of that has always been sunlight. I wonder if NHS advice has changed because of parents now being more cautious about exposing babies and children to the sun.

Breast fed babies have been recommended vitamins for at least 30 years . Bottle fed don't really need them. It doesn't mean we all chose to give.

I was just about to post that current guidance is for all children aged 6 months - 5 (unless they drink more than 500ml formula a day) is to have a multivitamin containing A,C and D. I use Abidec drops on my 18 month old and he loves the taste.

So far he is eating well but if he does got through a fussy phase then I'll use a multivitamin that is more comprehensive!

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 23/10/2023 09:40

I used to use the haliborange syrup and now she's 4 I used the Haliborange jellies.

She gets a varied diet and isn't a fussy eater but as previous posters say that the recommendation is that under 5s are given a multivitamin.

Superscientist · 23/10/2023 09:41

For a healthy diet all they need is vit A, C and D.
Our HV sold the NHS healthy starts vitamins.
Look for vitamins that are drops or 0.5ml max
My daughter has a restricted diet so we give her multivitamins.
Everyone in the UK should take a vitamin D supplement through winter due to the cold short days.

My DD suffers with ARFID so has vitamins to help replace the ones she misses in her diet. My doctor prescribed ABIDEC however they have no iron in them. If you’re looking for ones that include iron too- well baby is our go to! 5ml mixed into a drink on a morning depending on age but it will tell you how much on the packaging anyway.

Interesting reading this. My child is 3 & has just started vitamins. Breastfed. Had formula once that stopped (1 year). Asked a pharmacist when DS was 2, and she said there was no need (it wouldn’t make difference in terms of colds etc…).

Eats various things. Has favourites (that are easy to make!)
But DS hasn’t ever like meat, I want to add it in now though.
